Does anybody have SERIOUS user information on the BQ Ubuntu phone?
I've just spent the last 2 hours trying to unearth serious information about the long-awaited Ubuntu phone.......I failed!
On the assumption that, 'people who have already got a 170+ phone are not going to buy this', I presume that Canonical are going for the Ubuntu user market.
Hence, they will know that at very least, their market is going to be highly interested in the detail, and a good chunk have probably been holding off buying a smart phone for just this moment.
Yet there is no detail to be had....... and what there is...... is spread out across a few initial reviews that also contain almost no information.
So..... does anybody have any relevant information?
(and does anybody have any theory as to why there is no information provided?......... or is this phone only intended for developers?)
From watching both adolescents & adults, I'm guessing that smartphone usage is primarily listed as:
Telephone Use
We can presume that sound quality is good, and that it auto-stores numbers with an easy option to add such number to 'Evolution contacts'.
Seamless contact integration will surely have been the no. 1 objective, though confirmation of this being achieved would be nice.
Texting
We are informed it can do this, so fine.
Presumably there is little more to say, other than test commentary on how well the keyboard works - no reviewer mentioned this (which I found strange, but maybe it is perfect).
Social Networking Integration
We are informed it can do this, so fine.
Whatever is required - it surely must do everything required, cos it is clearly so important.
Video, Photography, Sound recording
No information other than it can take photos and videos.
This is one of the killer apps associated with mobile phones, requiring a whole host of detailed information.
For me personally, this would be the main killer app (after telephone calls) but there is no information available.....
..... like, zero information (unless stating megapixels is classed as information).
Music
It will play music, but there is no detailed information on this killer app.
Imagine how many people like music.
Email
No information how email works, yet this is a 'mission critical' app....... the money you earn, probably depends upon your email..... yet no information.
There are probably other apps important to people like sharing documents etc. etc. etc.
Either way..... there is no information.
Web Integration
It does appear that it will sync with google bookmarks (got that off youtube LOL), so that's useful.
So after the primary killer apps, let's move on to perhaps the one reason why you might decide to buy one of these pocket computers:
Ubuntu (cos you use Ubuntu)
Where is the in depth outline of what this means to the Ubuntu user (the primary reason why you might make the big leap)?
The road map for desktop integration at very least..... docking, file syncing, monitor, keyboard?
..... and would that mean, using this current hardware (BQ E 4.5), for the non existent roadmap might be followed?
170........ I could manage that...... but with no information on what I will be getting..... it is just impossible to make such an investment.
So what do we know, that is sort of 'non-thinking purchase' info:
Screen Resolution
Znet states it is a 960 x 540 resolution.
I checked out an April 2014 phone comparison page....... none had such a low screen resolution.
The Moto G 4.5" had 1280 x 720 yet it is a similar price (maybe the 960 x 540 screen is better?)
This is why I'm thinking that the phone is just for developers, cos the screen res seems very low compared to 2014 models.
Glass
Nothing mentioned....... and because every single smartphone appears to get dropped...... a note on replacement screens would have been comforting.
Battery Life
?
...................... You get the picture.
As an Ubuntu user that is looking to buy a smart phone; I have found no information to tell me that 'now is the moment'.
It reminds me of 256 shades of grey laser printing.
We all knew it was coming...... and when it finally arrived; everybody bought them.
But it was a simple decision, because the information needed to make a purchase, wasn't complex.
The pocket computer/smartphone is far more complex........ but we, the potential user, understands that....... I think that we'd just like the information.
My guess is that, like the printer, there is an enormous market out there, for a usable Ubuntu phone (the Ubuntu Edge project proved that).
The only question is..... what can it do..... and can it do what is required?
Does anybody know the answer?
