[ubuntu] Wireless connection unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 (ASUS N56JN) topic

Hi,
I am a newcomer to Ubuntu 14.04 and installed it in dual boot with the original Win 8.1 for work purposes on my new ASUS N56JN laptop. It has a Ralink internal Wireless card (I couldn't find any specific model in the info given by Asus or by Windows device manager). I'm experiencing a few issues on the Wi-fi side:

-when connecting to my parents' house wireless network, it would make the network unavailable for others and the connection would repeatedly disconnect after a few seconds of stability (WPA2 security protocol);
-when trying to connect to my university's secured network, it can't connect after asking for username and password and any further connection attempt gives the "failed to activate network" message.
-when trying to connect to my university's open network (which requires browser authentication), it connects but then doesn't allow to contact the server for browser authentication.

Could anyone help in solving at least one of the 2 "university" problems? I specificate that under Win 8.1 everything works perfectly, nonetheless I need a Linux system to work on so I badly need to solve this problem.
I also have to point out that I can't connect to the internet while on Ubuntu, so any internet-requiring solution is ruled out unless it can be adapted using Win to download files and then switching to Ubuntu for running them.
Step by step solutions are appreciated since I am not much familiar with shell and the whole Linux environment yet.

Thank you,

Carlo
