Garmin GPS on Linux topic

Hi, I am gradually trying to move from Windows to Linux. So far I successfully installed Linux on my PC, made both my printer (HP, easy) and scanner (Epson, Linux drivers on their website) run and managed to mount my Synology NAS with NFS over my LAN. For my RAW images from my Nikon DSLR I can use RAWtherapee. So far so good and I am really optimistic. But my Garmin GPS is not so easy. I searched a lot on the internet and in this forum, but did not succeed. So I hope to get some wiser here. Maybe there is someone here who has allready invented this wheel :-).

So far I used my Garmin under Windows with Mapsource. I spend some time to get this working under Linux. I installed Babel, GPSD, Gebabbel and played with the settings in QLandkarte. But with no success. I have some questions from top level down to the Linux commands:
  1. Some people got this working by running Mapsource under Wine. I havent tried this yet. My goal is to get this all native under Linux. If this is not possible I will have to use this opion.
  2. I hope QLandkarteGT is a good alternative for Mapsource. I jut installed it and it looks good. I think it uses Open Source Maps (OSM). When I get this working with my GPS, will I be able to transfer these OSM to my GPS? Could this be an alternative for City Navigator from Garmin?
  3. I managed to make a connection between my Garmin and Linux. I had to make a connection myself on the GPS by Menu > Settings > Interface. I am used to a autodetect function under Windows. Is it possible to get autodetect under Linux? If so, what is the way to get this done?
  4. With the connection I got a mount on my desktop. It was not possible for me to get my tracks from my GPS to QLandkarteGT. I played around in QLandkarte with the Setup Menu > General > Device & Tranfer. I tried both Garmin and Garmin Mass Storage and in the end GPSD. By lack of knowledge, this was just a try to see if it works.
  5. I tried to make this work by using the terminal. Hard to reproduce it here.

So far nu succesfull communication between QLandkarte and my Garmin GPS. I hope someone has done this before and can help me further.
