More than new to Ubantu - I haven't even seen it yet! topic

Hello,

I'm retired and 71 years old. At one stage of my chequered career (80's - 90's) I was even a PC technician but with age all I now want is for "it" to function! By "it" I mean being able to do the basics: Text, spreadsheet, scan, retouching photos of our grand children and "surfing" the Internet (which I far prefer to the TV)!

I'm on OSX and I have 2 x 15" MacBook Pro's. The old one dates from march 2008 and is running OSX 10.6.8. I was wondering whether I could install Ubantu on this one with the long term idea of leaving the "Wonderful World of Apple" which is becoming too "fast" for me in that the OSX is changing so often that the older hardware and other programs I have won't function on the newer versions and this is costly now that I'm on a pension.

I would also prefer avoiding as much as possible the "learning curve" and to be able to use icons on a desktop, Windows/OSX style.

I have an additional problem in that I'm Anglophone and I live in France where believe it or not everything is unfortunately in French (!) so I tend to order stuff from England.

Would a knowledgable Ubantu person please let me know whether my old Mac Book Pro will run Ubantu and whether there are versions of Ubantu that would be best for my hopefully simple needs.

Thanks in advance

Bob
