[ubuntu] Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and USB but not the IOMMU problem topic

So I have installed 14.04 onto a new hard disk in my PC with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 version 4.0, and having read through the forums, I have updated GRUB with IOMMU=soft, and changed the BIOS so now I have networking and basic USB working.

However, I still cannot use any USB3.0, or get any removable storage to work for USB1.1/USB2.0.

Basic system details are:

Ubuntu 14.04.01
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
Gigabyte Radeon 5850
2Tb HDD
8Gb RAM
Generic DVD drive
USB3.0 front panel with card reader

So the lsusb output with nothing plugged in externally other than my Logitech Trackman is:

Code:

bradley@UbuntuDesktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 046d:c404 Logitech, Inc. TrackMan Wheel
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 009 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 008 Device 002: ID 2109:3431
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

From this, I suspect the front panel is Bus 008 Device 002, but that is only a guess.

For the same hardware setup, the usb-devices output is:

In this output, if you look at the second-last entry, it shows up as

Code:

Bus=08 Dev#= 2 Product USB2.0 hub

, which supports my theory that it is the front panel adapter, as it is different from all the other products that are either OHCI or xHCI controllers, and correspond to items in the ls-usb output.

So now we test my question, with a pair of Kingston data traveller USB2.0/3.0, 8Gig, a JMTek USB1.1 128Meg, a Western Digital USB2.0 400Gig external HDD and a USB3.0 Realtek Semiconductor Corp external card reader.

With all devices plugged in to on-board USB2.0 ports we see:

Code:

bradley@UbuntuDesktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 1058:1010 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. Elements External HDD

So we can see all of the things we plugged in. But none of them automount and open a nautilis window like they did on my old (broken) 12.04 PC and still do on my LinuxCNC (based on Ubuntu 10.04) PC.

I went here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB and followed the Configure Automounting section, which was already set to supposedly automount. Then I went to the Manually Mounting Using Disks section, and ran Disks. From this I was able to mount 1 of the two Kingston data traveller drives, the JMTek drive, the WD HDD and the external card reader (with a flash card in one of the slots). I could see a bunch of entries (five) for:

/dev/sdf Generic- USB3.0 CRW-CF/MD
/dev/sdg Generic- USB3.0 CRW-SM/xD
/dev/sdi Generic- USB3.0 CRW-MS
/dev/sdj Generic- USB3.0 CRW-SD/MS
/dev/sdh Generic- USB3.0 CRW-SD <-------- this had a 32Gb flash card in it

which I assume is the external card reader.

So next we want to unplug some of the USB drives, and try them in the USB3.0 ports. I swapped the card reader and one of the Kingston drives to the back USB3.0 ports, and the other Kingston to the front USB3.0 port (the second front USB3.0 port being the card reader). Now lsusb looks like this:

Code:

bradley@UbuntuDesktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 1058:1010 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. Elements External HDD
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 046d:c404 Logitech, Inc. TrackMan Wheel
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0c76:0005 JMTek, LLC. Transcend Flash disk
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 009 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

So everything we unplugged is gone and has not shown up attached to the USB3.0.

So basically USB3.0 just drops of the face of the earth, and nothing will automount even though the system configuration should automount and open a nautilis window each time.

Can anyone help?
