[ubuntu] printer trouble topic

Hi

I am using Ubuntu 14.04.

I made an error trying to upgrade a programme (tried to intall a 32-bit package on a 64-bit system, could that be it?) and as a result several things broke (related to python?). My installation of Google Chrome seemed to have disappeared, as did my printer. I got Chrome back. And now I can see my wifi printer online (SyncThru Web Service) and print a proper testpage from there. But if I try to print from a regular programme, the printer (Samsung Xpress M2825DW) appears in the print dialogue, but the machine just spits out endless white pages with code on them.

I cannot use system-config-printer ('fail to connect to CUPS server', 'CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running', etc) to reinstall the printer or check the settings.

Could someone possibly walk me through some steps to try to fix this? I have been using Linux for 10 years but am not a very technical person.

thanks

[ubuntu] trouble booting ubuntu 14.4 topic

I've been working on installing ubuntu on a laptop which formerly had windows 8.1. Acer Aspire ES1-512-C88M. I am able to successfully install but can't boot from the hdd. I installed using USB. Steps that I've taken so far:
1. Verified boot from HDD is first option in BIOS and booting UEFI.
2. Gparted to add boot flag to hdd partition
3. Boot-repair/recommended repair - output (http://paste.ubuntu.com/10128271/)

Those were the most common bits of advice I found on these message boards. Anything else I can try?

Trouble with APPENDs and syslinux.cfg topic

While playing around with a new flash drive, I decided I wanted to make a nice multi-boot stick. To test the waters, I used the tool Multiboot USB to put Ubuntu and UBCD on the same stick and it worked fine. The next step I wanted to try was adding persistence to my Ubuntu disc, so I downloaded PDL Casper-RW Creator. I generated a 4GB blank casper-rw file and dropped it in the root of the drive.

Next, I went into my syslinux.cfg to add in my boot options. Unfortunately, nothing seems to apply. I put in options for persistence and to skip the Try/Install screen and neither is working. Otherwise it boots fine. Does anyone have any ideas? I am pretty new to this.

This is what the relevant section of my syslinux.cfg looks like--

Code:

#start ubcd533
LABEL ubcd533
MENU LABEL ^UBCD
BOOT /multibootusb/ubcd533/boot/syslinux/ubcd.bs
#end ubcd533

#start ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64
LABEL ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64
MENU LABEL U^buntu
BOOT /multibootusb/ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64/isolinux/ubuntu.bs
APPEND persistent quiet splash noprompt --
#end ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64
