[ubuntu] how should I work with Apache's web folder (network sharing permissions)? topic

I need to put my web files under /var/www/ which is the web root. I'd like to do my editing in Windows and save them under the web folder. So, I tried sharing /var/www/ via the GUI, but it tells me 'could not change the permissions of folder'. If I change the permissions of www to 777, and tried sharing again, I get error that sharing folder we don't own is restricted, 'ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only=false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this'.

Before I go ahead with this, is this a safe approach, or is there a better way? The site is not live and I'm just working with it. Thanks.

Had a very rough time setting up Dual-Booting Macbook.. What should be my next step? topic

Hello! As you con probably tell this is my first post on the Ubuntu forums and I highly doubt it will be the last (in a good way).

As the title says, I spent a weekend just trying to set up a Macbook Pro (running Yosemite) to dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04.
It was rough, but I think I finally got a working install.

However, I am still facing a few issues upon booting, and I was wondering if you can tell me if there are certain steps that should be taken after the install.
I.E. drivers, software updates, things like that.

Right now the only issues I face are:
  • A Pop Up Window that states "System program problem detected"
  • Random freezing when navigating anywhere, including dragging a terminal window or clicking on the top menu bar.
  • Glitched text/windows

I apologize if this seems like a very vague request, I'm very new to Linux (first install) and I'd just like to make sure I do things properly.
Thank you for your help, and if I need to elaborate on anything I will try my best.

what should I do when SDL hijacks my inputs and freezes topic

this has been happening for quite a while, SDL games like Minecraft and Nexuiz would freeze on random events (Wine or not, it doesn't matter)
with Minecraft, I could still hit Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal to enter 'killall java' to get my cursor back...
but with Nexuiz I had no KBd control when it froze.

I had other programs running at the time including VBox which my VM is now corrupt because I had to 5-second shut-down to get my control back

what can I do to prevent trash like this from happening??

I'm guessing nothing because this sounds like yet another issue with SDL 9_9

so I can't use VS2010 atm because VBox tells me to run an invalid file...
what a lovely day this is turning out to be -.-*
