[ubuntu] Boot with VLC + start reading media files from a given folder topic

Hi guys,

I need your help.

I'm quite new in Ubuntu (I'm more Mac or Windows user)
But I need to come up asap with a solution to:

1. Open VLC on Ubuntu boot
2. VLC should start reading media files from a concrete local folder (ideal in Full Screen mode. there's a way to open VLC and indicate a folder to play, but how to sett it up straight away on the boot)

Thank you very much for your help in advance!
I'm very bad with codes etc. will be very thanks full for a detailed advice or instruction.

Thanks

[ubuntu] My computer does not boot, boot-repair did not fix it topic

Hi everyone,

I find myself in dire need of your help. My laptop boots into Grub fine, but then it gets stuck on the spash screen. The splash screen does keep going, but I left it for more than 30 minutes without touching it at once to no avail before giving up and force shutdown.

I have then proceeded to boot into my Utopic liveusb, install and run boot-repair, which didn't solve the problem but it did give me a notice that there was an error in the procedure. However I don't have the knowledge necessary to make sense of the log it gave me: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10179211/

I really one of you will understand something there and know how to fix it... Anyway, a bit more context:

My laptop is an Asus UX301, it has been running Ubuntu (13.10, then 14.04 and now 14.10) more than fine for about a year now, I hadn't had any issue (not even slight ones) for months until now, what led to the state it is now seems to have happened after I closed the lid to suspend the computer, only to find it heated up a few hours later and unresponsive, forcing me to force shutdown and to find it not booting up after letting it cool for a few minutes.

The laptop is running two 256 gigs Sandisk SSDs in Raid0, which has me scared that one of them has had a failure and killed the array. However, I'm no expert (not at all), but when I booted up the LiveUSB and got into gparted, it did recognize the Raid array and its filesystems and both drives individually, as well as what seems like the right proportion of used/unused space on the array, which makes me hopeful that the drives are both fine-ish at least. I may be completely delusional, not knowledgeable enough to make such assumptions...

So yeah, here's to hoping one of you has the answer to my issue. If you think the drives are OK, but the system is lost, I would appreciate it if you let me know of a way to access the array and salvage what unbacked-up data I had lying around before reinstalling.

Thanks in advance for your answers !

PS: If you need any further information to help, I'll try and provide it as fast as possible.

Intermittent Touchpad Errors on Boot- Ubuntu 14.04 topic

Occasionally while booting I will see an error pop up relating to my touchpad not loading. I haven't gotten a good look at it because it seems to happen at random, but it seems to mention synaptics. Keep in mind that I am running 14.04, so it's my understanding that synaptics is no longer used. When these errors occur, my touchpad will respond very sluggishly and tap to click does not function. Where do I start to solve this?

LVM cant Boot - ALERT /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root does not exist DROPPING to Shell - topic

Help needed - hopefully someone has had this issue where after a reboot the server just goes to BusyBox
(initramfs)

What I've tried already unsuccessfully is:
from Live Disk
==================
sudo su
apt-get install lvm2
vgchange -a y

(do any lvm management you need here, I didn't need any.)
mkdir /mnt/system
mount /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root /mnt/system
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/system/boot
for i in /dev/pts /dev /proc /sys; do mount -B $i /mnt/system$i; done
chroot /mnt/system
update-initramfs -k all -c
exit
for i in /dev/pts /dev /proc /sys; do umount /mnt/system$i; done
umount /mnt/system/boot
umount /mnt/system
==================
Second Thing I've tried is:

Last resort was to use BootRepair :
http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/
Also not happy - same result

Here's the Boot info and copied into the post at the bottom

http://paste.ubuntu.com/10172826/

=========== What I'm trying next Fixing LVM in initfs ============
from the post:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/26886...desktop-livecd
starting at:
"You hit the problem right on the head: the initramfs does not have LVM support. Here's how to fix it:"

But I don't think I should copy all the .deb files as shown in the post

[ubuntu] Cannot boot from USB HDD with Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed topic

This probably has been answered before, but I cannot find a thread specific to my problem. If so, I appolgise.
I have an old laptop (Advent 5712) on which is installed Windows 7. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS on a USB hard drive, which can be removed at any time without the Windows MBR having been overwritten (to enable me to boot into Windows without external HDD attached).

I have created bootable flash drive (memory stick) with Ubuntu on it. That's OK, it works.
I format the USB HDD in Windows to NTFS (to get rid of any residual remnants of Linux partitions previously installed on there).
I set the BIOS bootup order to USB HDD, then internal HDD, then USB flash drive. This will ensure on re-boot it will not boot to USB flash drive as a first choice.
On boot up, I can tell the system what device to boot to first (ie. over-riding the normal boot order): I select USB flash drive.
I do an Ubuntu installation on the USB HDD following the instructions as per:
http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2013/10/23...al-hard-drive/
The "Device for boot loader installation" I set to /dev/sdb (my USB HDD).
The only diference was I made the swap partition logical.
So far, all goes well. Everything installs.
Upon restarting after installation, lots of information flashes on the screen (too quick to read), then it reboots straight into Windows.
If I then remove the internal HDD from the BIOS boot menu, and remove the USB flash drive (so it can only boot from external HDD), it says no Operating System found.

So it cannot boot from the Ubuntu HDD. Examining the Ubuntu HDD using live Ubuntu on flash drive, the partitions are there.

I've also tried to create Ubuntu USB HDD with an initial /boot partition (sdb1) and putting the bootloader installation into there. It still does not work.

Please, where am I going wrong?

My next stage would be to shrink the Windows partition on the internal HDD, freeing up space for an extra partition and installing Ubuntu on there as a dual boot PC. But I want to try out Ubuntu on USB HDD first.

Many thanks and extremely frustrated :) .

Dual Boot With 8.1 - No Windows Boot Choice topic

Trying to set up a new Dell laptop. I've been round & round with this ending up running boot-repair which got me back to booting into Linux at least. But no choice in the grub menu for 8.1. My boot-repair file is here: http://paste2.org/_Zn2C0ejj

I sure would appreciate any guidance. Can't find my way out of this one.

No boot after update topic

My Ubuntu has stopped booting after an update, how can I access the last old kernel. It gets to my desktop and won't go any further, hangs so to speak. Thanks.

The volume "boot" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining topic

I know others have posted this, I have read and read and I really need some help.

Here is some (not even close) to all I have done, to try to fix this. I have lost track of what I have done so here is a start I supose.

OK so I have been getting this 0 bytes available in /boot for a while aI I have been trying to fix it.

[ubuntu] deleted Ubuntu, can't boot Windows topic

I deleted ubuntu on my Surface pro with Win 8.1. I deleted the partitions, rebooted it and with the commandprompt wrote bootrec.exe /fixmbr as I read in numerous guides. I also tried the automatic repair. But it just won't work. I just get tu GNU GRUB minimal. What did I do wrong, and how do I fix it?

[ubuntu] How to fix Dual Boot - Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.10 on XPS 15 9530? topic

I'm struggling to get my new laptop to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.10 properly. I went through the installer yesterday and let it resize the partitions (500G SSD). I did *not* disable secure boot at the time. The installation went flawlessly and on reboot, I was presented with the GRUB menu. I was able to log in to my Ubuntu without trouble at that point. Later, I needed to reboot. When I did, I was taken immediately to my Windows installation. Since then, I've been unable to get the GRUB menu to show up again. I've tried multiple times with boot-repair from live image, but I can't seem to get it to work. One attempt hung the machine while updating GRUB. The latest failed while stating "Locked-ESP detected". At this point, I'm unsure what to try next.

The boot-repair "Boot Info Script" is available at http://paste.ubuntu.com/10160793/

Thanks for any help.

Dual Boot Ubuntu SSD/HDD + Windows 8 HDD topic

I Have a 500gb HDD + 24gb SSD laptop, and I came with Windows pre-installed, I want to know how to change my partitions in a way that Ubuntu keeps roughly 2/3 or more of the HDD disk, and about the SSD, it already has a 2 partitions, if I left it this way will Ubuntu make full use of the SSD or I need to change these partitions too?

Code:

How it is now:
Disk0:
100 MB (EFI System Partition)
900 MB Healthy (Recovery Partition)
183.40 GB - OS (C:) - NTFS - Healthy (boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
261.25 GB - Data (D:) - NTFS - Healthy (Primary Partition)
20 GB Healthy (Recovery Partition)

Disk1:
8 GB - Healthy (OEM Partition)
12.97 GB - Healthy (Primary Partition)

To summarize, I will Shrink roughly 260gb HDD from both OS (C:) and Data (D:) (I don't know if I can Shrink Recovery Partitions) and about the SSD, I intend to shrink all but OEM (I dont know if I can or if I will have problems in future), so Ubuntu can make fully use of my SSD (I assumed it and I don't know nothing about partitions, is it right?).
And about the so called, swap area, is it better to be in the SSD partition ? What would be better for Ubuntu to be partitioned in the SSD ?
How I intend to do: First One Large partition for Ubuntu, Second other larger Partition for my home partition and a Third smaller for my swap space (the tutorial I'm following says it should be 1.5 ~ 2x my RAM, then 12gb, is it right?, It is the whole Primary partition of the SSD). Is it the best way to make Ubuntu fully use my computer resources?

[ubuntu] Continuous crashes at boot time topic

After a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 and about 10 days of smooth running, my laptop Samsung 5 Ultra started to print various crash/error warnings at boot and to get no connection to wireless. After several attempts to solve the latter (critical!) problem, I installed wicd as network manager and then the connection problem was solved, but not the boot warnings, which increased in number!
Attached an example. Even it happens the system is not able to send the crash/error report (this generated another error warning!).
Any idea?
Anyway it looks it is not a very critical error since the laptop works as if everything is OK...

[ubuntu] is it possible to dual boot with ubuntu on msata and windows 8.1 on a standard hdd? topic

sorry if this has been covered, i could not find anything specific to my question in search. anyway, title says (almost) all. i have an acer m5-583p-6423 that i am looking to put an msata in for ubuntu. i also have the mechanical hdd with windows 8.1 that i would rather be left untouched if possible. is there anything in whine-dows i need to change to prevent it from caching to the msata or is that something that is off by default? anything i should watch for during the ubuntu install? i am generally good with hardware, and can get by in linux, but i have never actually tried this, so i figured i would ask so as to avoid borking anything

thanks in advance.

Unable to boot-- all files lost? please help! topic

Hi there!

I came home and tried to turn my computer on but got the message no bootable device and was unable to boot into my ubuntu 14.04. I dual boot with windows 7 but cannot access that either, just a black screen with the error message.

Usually what happens is a purple screen where there are a few options including ubuntu 14.04 and windows 7 and i choose one and it boots.

I have since then made sure my bios settings are fast boot: off and the eufi settings are set to both eufi and the other one (sorry forget the name!) but all variations in my bios settings make no difference. Sometimes it shows my SDD in the boot options (i think thats my hardrive?) but sometimes not.. I took that back off my laptop and unplugged the harddrive then put it back in but no difference..

I've created a bootable usb stick and i now use my computer on a "try it now" live session.

I ran boot repair, the first time it said successful but then went to an empty screen with a loading wheel that then went on forever till my power cut out. (my laptops battery is dead, needs to stay plugged in). The pastebin given to me for this 'successful' boot repair was http://paste.ubuntu.com/9690854/

When i turned the computer back on there had been no change, still black screen. i tried again and this time it said 'backup your files' and gave me a pastebin which said 'no partitions'

I've left it a few weeks and i just tried again with the boot repair and the pastebin also says 'no partitions': http://paste.ubuntu.com/10133958/

Does this mean all my files have been lost? on both windows and ubuntu? I dont mind about getting the two operating systems back, or the files I had on windows 7, I just really want to get back the files I had on the Ubuntu OS, it had all my photos and work and secure documents, some of which were encfs files i opened with cryptkeeper.

Is there any way of getting them back? massive disaster if I can't!

I'm on a samsung series 5 ultra laptop

Many thanks for any help you can give me!!!!

-Jonathan

Mythbuntu Boot failures unless using older kernel topic

Hello:

Long time mythbuntu user, first time poster.

I have been running Mythbuntu 14.04 with no problems until a few days ago when I started experiencing failures on reboots. Most boots fail after the GRUB menu, with the message that it cannot find the root drive. If I use the GRUB 2 menu on boot to choose an older kernel (3.2.0-70-generic) then it boots fine every time. But if I choose the default current kernel (3.13.0-44-generic), the boot fails "most" of the time (but, strangely, it will occasionally boot just fine.) Logs are no help. I re-generated the grub.cfg file but the problem recurred.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to start looking for the problem? Thank you for your time!

/Greg
