[ubuntu] Can't install Wine on Ubuntu 14.04 topic

I am unable install Wine on Ubuntu 14.04 through the software center. I have tried opening up a terminal session and running sudo apt-get update but still get the same error.

The errors are listed below. Any thoughts on how to install Wine?

Thank you

Carmen

Install of package with pear fails topic

I was following a document on how to setup snort and associated programs in ubuntu, and ran into trouble with some php install for the BASE part of the install. The first command to run was:

sudo apt-get install -y apache2 libapache2-mod-php5 php5 php5-mysql php5-common \
php5-gd php5-cli php-pear

Which went fine, then:

sudo pear install -f Image_Graph

I received a few warnings but per the instructions those are to be expected and aren't a problem (apparently), then the problem:

Starting to download Image_Graph-0.8.0.tgz (367,646 bytes)
.................................................. .........................done: 367,646 bytes
could not extract the package.xml file from "/build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/Image_Graph-0.8.0.tgz"
Download of "pear/Image_Graph" succeeded, but it is not a valid package archive
Error: cannot download "pear/Image_Graph"

I did some googling but didn't really find anything useful.

Install of 14.04 hanging sometimes and also saying "hard drive error" topic

I am fairly new to Ubuntu. I have had 13.01 on this computer for about 6 months with no problems. I love it. It was put on by a friend who did a complete wipe of windows per my request. (it was running very slowly and he said files were corrupt. (I assume he was talking about the files, not microsoft.) ;) Anyway, I was updating/ upgrading files and I could have rebooted or something while this was going on and it would not reboot. It went into a screen to follow certain things...I did all of those to no avail.I had all of my files backed up so I decided to do a complete install of 14.01. I followed the directions ...made a live boot disk and a live USB. Both of them will run ok but when I try to just install It hangs or I get the installation crashed. it is as follows:
Error copying files
[Errno30] read-only file system : '/target / mnt'

when I did a check disk from the Ubuntu software it said "2 files bad" may be a bad disk...needs to be in a cooler area....
and when it trys to report it says "problem cannot be reported"

When I first had the problem I took it to a computer repair place and they checked the HD and they said it checked out to be fine.
I did a check disk to find it was ok too.

The computer is a Toshiba satellite L655 I am running Ubuntu 14.04 from the Live USB right now
memory 3.7 GiB
intel pentium(R) CPU P6100 @2.0 GHz x 2
Graphics card intel Ironlake Mobile
OS 64bit
Disk 2.0 GB
I think the hard drive is 300GB

Please help.

James

[ubuntu] Clean install ubuntu, only GRUB commandline shows up topic

Hi,
Is there anybody out there?
Just nob if you can here me..

Im just kidding, I bought a new notebook acer aspire e11 yesterday with preinstalled windows 8.1, I go straight to install ubuntu 14.04 , I create partition as instructed in this link
http://www.tecmint.com/ubuntu-14-04-installation-guide/
However, when clicking install, theres warning message that I have to create boot partition ( not /boot) and define it as EFI mode. I gave it 200mb. However, after install, there is no bootable device, only grub commandline appear. I logged into bios and setup my only hard disk as first priority, but its still remains.

I tried boot-repair with recommended options, but situation still the same.
Heres the diagnostic result

Ubuntu 14.04 Grub Error After Install Win 8.1 topic

Last year I blew away my Windows 8 trying to work through some Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade issues. I recently saw a Youtube video where Windows 7 was installed on an Ubuntu 14.04 PC.
Step 1. I shrunk my Ubuntu partition
Step 2. Successfully installed Windows 8.1 on the unallocated space (240GB)
Step 3. Used Easy BCD 2.2 to create Ubuntu boot menu. I saw Ubuntu on the hard drive. After installation, the computer boots to the Grub Rescue> prompt. Cannot get back to Windows without resetting PC.
Step 3. Reset PC, then rebooted using live Boot-Repair boot USB. Boot repair will not repair Grub with message 'Filesystem repair requires to unmount partitions. Please close all your programs. Then close this window.' My boot information report is at http://paste.ubuntu.com/10177356/.
Is my Ubuntu salvageable? If so, I need simple step by step actions to accomplish. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Getting Wireless working on new install while offline topic

I in a catch-22 situation. I'm away from home in a hotel room with only WiFi [no RJ45 to plug into]. I brought a LUbuntu [14.10] installation disk and figured I would use this opportunity to get my laptop setup. It never occurred to me that the hotel room with be void of a wired connection!

I'm here with my wife, and have occasional access to my wife's Win 8 laptop so I can use it's wireless connection to download files, so I acquired the following, and transferred then to my laptop using a USB Flash Drive:

  • dkms_2.2.0.3-1.1buntu_all.deb
  • gksu_2.0.2-6ubuntu2_amd64.deb
  • libgksu2-0_2.0.13~pre1-6ubuntu4_amd64.deb
  • ndisgtk_0.8.5-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  • ndiswrapper-common_1.59-2_all.deb
  • ndiswrapper-dkms_1.59-2_all.deb
  • ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.59-2_amf64.deb

When I attempted to install them, I soon discovered that I needed gcc to compile them, which is absent from my Linux installation. Then I discovered that without the ability to use apt-get to acquire all the files needed to build and install gcc ['cuz my laptop has no internet connection], the task is a veritable nightmare of dependency upon dependency!!!

Does anyone have an idea of how I can to this? I looked for a gcc binary, but found none. Is there, perhaps, a friendly [apt-get-ish] way to use Win8 to collect the required gcc source files so I can move them over to my Linux laptop? Or is there a place that I can acquire a tar of ALL the files needed to build gcc?

Windows 8 partition gone after Ubuntu 14.04 install please help topic

Hi,
I know there is a lot of similar posts, but none of the solutions there helped me. I had Windows 8 running on a partition of my ssd and there was another empty partition. I wanted to install Ubuntu to that partition. During the installation it said that it hadn't found any OS on the hard drive so I thought "great it is already on the right partition, without me having to choose it." I guess I was wrong. Because after the first reboot I got into Ubuntu directly. No boot loader appeared.

After some research I commented out this line in the etc/default/grub file:

Code:

#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

at the next reboot grub 2 appeared, but had no Windows option. Also the dell boot options had no Windows option.

I ran boot repair and clicked on the "recommended repairs" button. After that a Windows Option is available in the dell boot options, but it leads me straight back to the grub menu, where I still don't have a Windows option.
Here is the result link, that boot repair gave me: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10156983/

I also ran ubuntu on a bootable flash drive and did the "recommended repairs" in boot repair there. It didn't change a thing.
Here is the result link from that: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10171829
I then clicked on "advanced options" and wanted to change the default OS to load from there, but it only showed the option Ubuntu.

I also tried what is suggested here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/21091...dual-boot?lq=1
with the exact entry suggested:

Quote:

Second, you may be able to get GRUB to chainload Windows by adding a suitable entry to /etc/grub.d/40_custom and then doing a sudo update-grub. An entry might look something like this:

menuentry "Windows 8" {
set root='(hd0,gpt1)'
chainloader /EFI/microsoft/BOOT/bootmgfw.efi
}

and I tried this from that same thread:

Quote:

Try making a file called /etc/grub.d/30_windows that contains this:

#! /bin/bash
cat << EOF
menuentry "Windows 8" {
insmod part_gpt
insmod chain
set root='(hd0,gpt1)'
chainloader /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
}
EOF
Then run sudo update-grub and reboot.

I then had a Windows option in grub but it leads me back to the grub menu.

I tried installing grub to the right place but got this error:

Code:

sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: Fehler: cannot find EFI directory.

Now I'm no expert and I really hope that someone who knows how to interpret the boot repair details can tell me what the actual problem with my laptop is and can help me solve this. I still have some data on the Windows partition, that I didn't backup. All suggestions are welcome! But please give me step by step solutions, that I can understand. ;)
Thanks a lot!!

[ubuntu] Can't find Install Ubuntu Alongside Windows topic

Hello, I'm a new ubuntu user. Well not actually new since I have not installed it yet. But when installing. I'm having some trouble installing alongside windows.

I followed a tutorial. They do go for something else. But it shows Install alongside Windows BootManager. (I have no idea what it is) I cannot find that or alongside windows and have followed the tutorial all correctly. And on something else. (This was a different tutorial) He has 4 sda folders and one free space for like 40 gb. I have like 9 sda's and like 3 free space that only has like 1 MB or less. Could I please have some help with at least using alongside windows 8/8.1

Thanks in advance. Seb

[ubuntu] Unable to install Ubuntu server on a Fujitsu-Siemens Rx100 first gen topic

Hi folks,

I am pretty new to Linux in general, but still I hope you you will be able to help me solve an issue that is really frustrating.

I would like to install Ubuntu Server 14 on a Fujitsu-Siemens RX100 Gen1 server HW unit.

Specs:
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with up to
2.66 GHz and 533 MHz FSB, or Intel®
Celeron® with 2.0 GHz and 400 MHz FSB
ƒ Up to 3 Gbyte ECC protected DDR-SDRAM
memory
ƒ Onboard 2-channel IDE controller with
RAID-0/1 functionality for striping and
mirroring of the hard disks
ƒ Max. 240 Gbyte internal hard disk
capacity with up to 2 hard disks (IDE)
ƒ 2 free PCI slots, 64-bit / 33 MHz
ƒ Onboard 1 Gbit and 10/100 Mbit Ethernet
LAN controller
ƒ http://www.erkawe.be/hardware/datash...ergy-rx100.pdf

Every time i try to install this system it fails.
I believe the main problem is the Onboard 2-channel IDE controller. It is a Fasttrak controller based on a Promise 20270 chipset.
This SATA raid environment is not recognised and therefor there is nowhere for Linux to install.

Surely there must be a way to install this system with Ubuntu? Eventually I would like to use it as a webserver.

All help is much appreciated.

Regards

Wireless Used to Install Server 14.04 Now Wireless Connects but no Internet topic

I have an old laptop that I wanted to take with me to my Linux Classes to test some of the stuff on real equipment. I didn't have a patch cable so I used my wireless card to connect to my wireless network. I chose OpenSSH, LAMP, MAIL, SAMBA. As soon as I logged into the command line I downloaded the Ubuntu-desktop package. Once into the desktop the wireless would connect, but there was no internet, yet it was working fine before the extras were put in.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion G7-1328DX. Its about 3 1/2 years old.

I would like to update this post to mention that last night my Ethernet card was working. Now when I connect, it doesn't show up anymore. I have no idea what's going. I tested all of this in a virtual machine and it was fine until I tried installing it on an actual machine.

Install of R9 270 card in AMD 64 8core topic

Hello,

I recently have been stuggling to get the closed source drivers installed for the AMDR9 graphics card that my computer came with. The open source drivers work great, but I'm looking into using the streaming processors for parallel processing tasks (BEAST/Beagle software) and use of OpenCL and therefore the proprietary drivers (Catalyst) are recommended. As it stands, with the open source drivers, the Beagle software does not see the R9 stream processors, only CPU0.

The install support provided by the Beagle lib install page (https://code.google.com/p/beagle-lib...llInstructions) was very clear, but when I started installing the ADM catalyst drivers I ran into curious problems. Basically, no matter what guide I follow, whether it be the Ubuntu documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD), the AMD documentation (http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-arti...ler-Notes.aspx) or the method through the wiki of the unofficial AMD linux community (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide) I ran into problems.

The AMD information really lead to a dead end because the instructions are based on downloading or otherwise obtaining a file with a .run extention while the only file obtainable is a .deb installation file which can be used in Ubuntu Software Center or on the comment line. Following the (really very nice) guide from the unofficial AMD linux community (see above) provided a very similar result (see below). This is the same with any effort to use the .deb file from the AMD Catalysts website. Ubuntu software center sates that the .deb file has "fglrx-core" as a dependency, but is not satisfible. Ouch!
