Switching access points from command line? topic

I'm using a Transcend WiFi SD card in a camera, which behaves as an access point (essid WIFISD).

I've been switching from my router (essid dd-wrt) to the WiFi card using the network manager applet so I can download images, but would like to do it from a command line, so I can automate the procedure.

I've had a fiddle with iwconfig without any success, and I'm not even sure if this is the way to go.

Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can switch between the access points from a command line, please?

Thank you very much for your help in advance!
I'm very bad with codes etc. will be very thanks full for a detailed advice or instruction.

Where i can get a copy of dos that can be booted from a pen drive/USB? topic

Hello, i have a 2 GB pen drive and i wanted to put a copy of dos of it that is bootable so i can make a iso of it to then customize my own contents.
Also, will it be working fully if i just put batch files there and then boot from the usb to get there? And where would be the name of the batch file so i dont get a "Operating System not found" or a blinking underscore.

Any help?

[ubuntu] Cannot access time machine backup on external HDD after switching from OS X to Ubuntu topic

Hi,

I apologize in advance if this has already been figured out - I've put a few hours into this and tried many of the solutions found here and on the rest of the web with no success.

My current situation:
- MacBook got water damaged and is no longer able to be powered on
- Swapped out the SSD from the MB into my new ThinkPad (already had an Ubuntu partition on it)
- Have two years worth of backups on a 2 TB Seagate external drive (the entire thing is journaled / used for time machine only, I believe)
- Do not have permission to move/copy files off of the external drive

I have a lot of valuable things on my old drives, both the SSD in this computer and the external HD with my time machine backups. I want to back them up into the cloud so that I can erase this current SSD to give Ubuntu more than 30 gigs, something I can't do until I know for sure that my files are safe.

I've tried everything that I could find online including simple chmod'ing of the disk, running this script to copy from Time machine (https://gist.github.com/vjt/5183305), and almost anything else that has been suggested, to no avail. I simply don't have permission to copy them, even though the disk has "access" permissions for all users other than original. If I copy a directory using sudo -r cp, it simply creates a locked, 0 byte file at the destination with nothing in it / unable to open it.

If you have faced this problem before or have seen a solution, please reply and help me out. I apologize if some of the things I've said are incorrect, but I am new to Ubuntu (I love it!) and have not faced this problem before. I do not have access to OS X. Bonus points if I am able to change the permissions so that I can directly upload from the external drive to Google Drive / Mega without copying, since I only have 40 GB on this partition and have 300+ GB that I need to back up.

Any help is very much appreciated. Cheers :)

[ubuntu] dbus Rejected message from Network Manager topic

So I was inspecting the /var/log/auth.log, for reasons of the bug as listed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...y/+bug/1311316 and I found this, which possibly is not related to the bug, but I did not manage to find what it means, why it happens and should I worry:

Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS - after upgrade from 12.04 iSCSI no longer fully functional topic

I have an Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS server that I did a "do-release-upgrade" on from 12->13->Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS

Since that upgrade I can no longer map iSCSI volumes to local SCSI devices. iSCSI appears to be working properly. The iSCSI target is a Buffalo TeraStation that worked fine in 12.04 / 12.10. There are no ACLs or any security on the volume I am trying to map / mount to my Ubuntu server. I have removed and --reinstall install open-iscsi, then removed it and compiled it from scratch, same results.

Everything looks ok but I cannot mount / vgscan / access the volume whatsoever.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it! I'll keep digging and post any progress here. I think it might be a kernel / kernel module issue somewhere with iscsi.

Here is the output of various commands that hopefully illustrate the problem:

[ubuntu] Wiping Windows Recovery Environment from Partition, OK? :-/ topic

Can't figure out if it would be ok to delete this:
WP_20150211_13_55_37_Pro.jpg

The only reason I'm in doubt is because it says "(boot)", so I'm not sure if it'd be OK to remove it. I don't see why not but I don't want to mess up my craptop any more than it already has been.

[ubuntu] Cannot boot from USB HDD with Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed topic

This probably has been answered before, but I cannot find a thread specific to my problem. If so, I appolgise.
I have an old laptop (Advent 5712) on which is installed Windows 7. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS on a USB hard drive, which can be removed at any time without the Windows MBR having been overwritten (to enable me to boot into Windows without external HDD attached).

I have created bootable flash drive (memory stick) with Ubuntu on it. That's OK, it works.
I format the USB HDD in Windows to NTFS (to get rid of any residual remnants of Linux partitions previously installed on there).
I set the BIOS bootup order to USB HDD, then internal HDD, then USB flash drive. This will ensure on re-boot it will not boot to USB flash drive as a first choice.
On boot up, I can tell the system what device to boot to first (ie. over-riding the normal boot order): I select USB flash drive.
I do an Ubuntu installation on the USB HDD following the instructions as per:
http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2013/10/23...al-hard-drive/
The "Device for boot loader installation" I set to /dev/sdb (my USB HDD).
The only diference was I made the swap partition logical.
So far, all goes well. Everything installs.
Upon restarting after installation, lots of information flashes on the screen (too quick to read), then it reboots straight into Windows.
If I then remove the internal HDD from the BIOS boot menu, and remove the USB flash drive (so it can only boot from external HDD), it says no Operating System found.

So it cannot boot from the Ubuntu HDD. Examining the Ubuntu HDD using live Ubuntu on flash drive, the partitions are there.

I've also tried to create Ubuntu USB HDD with an initial /boot partition (sdb1) and putting the bootloader installation into there. It still does not work.

Please, where am I going wrong?

My next stage would be to shrink the Windows partition on the internal HDD, freeing up space for an extra partition and installing Ubuntu on there as a dual boot PC. But I want to try out Ubuntu on USB HDD first.

Many thanks and extremely frustrated :) .

Hi,

I have installed "ambari server" on server. And when I tried to access ambari server through VPN, I can not connect to it. Also, I found that i'm not able to ping even the VPN Ip from server.

Anyone there to help me in resolving this issue??

Thanks in advance.

can not access the samba share from ubuntu on Windows topic

Hello everyone !

I searched ALLOVER and still could not figure this out. I have ran samba and a samba share before and used it succesfully (off a raspi)

So the task is simple. Trying to share my RAID1 setup over the network as a NAS. I just want to use a samba share that doesnt ask for any username and password. On Windows, it says
that permission denied, even though i am sure i set it to 0775 and that anyone could access. Even on ubuntu when i try to click on the share i get the same error. I get this error on ubuntu

"mount: only root can mount //servername/sharename on /media/saad/NetworkArray/NetworkArray/" - Why is this happening when i am the admin ? (this is on 14.04 LTS)

On windows i get the permission denied error. Again, all i want is to be able to access the share without logging in or anything. Here is my SMB.CONF as well :

Code:

#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
# commented-out examples in this file.
#  - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
#    differs from the default Samba behaviour
#  - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
#    behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
#    enough to be mentioned here
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.

[SOLVED] Need help recovering my 8 GB flash drive from my attempts to format it differently topic

I attempted to format my 8 gig flash drive in different formats, using Gparted and Disk Utility so I could put a larger file on it than what was previously allowed.

Now I can't get Ubuntu 12.04 lts to recognize the flash drive when I insert it.

I can still see it in gparted or Disk Utility. I've formatted it the regular way I think, but it still doesn't show up.

Did I just corrupt the drive beyond recovery?

help please

see attachment screenshot of what Gparted reports that it is unrecognized disk

Trying to recover files from failed hard drive using ubuntu topic

HP Pavillion laptop refuses to boot, had a code 301 so assume hard drive has either failed or is about to. Desperately need to recover photos stored on this device (I know - backup backup backup). Have tried using Ubuntu live CD to recover and followed the tutorials but no joy. New user so not confident I've done everything right, or even if drive is recoverable at all.
Does the following ring any bells and if so could anyone give me an idiots guide as to what I should be trying?

How to use package from old version? topic

Hi,
I installed XUbuntu 14.04 "trusty".
Now for compiling some old X11/Motif C program I need the Motif libs as wel as the development header files.
Trusty offers libmotif-dev (http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libmotif-dev). However the Xm/Print.h is very old (1996) and obsolete.
On my previous computer I used Lesstif, with a header file dating from 2004 that worked there.
But Lesstif is not in trusty. It used to be in "precise" (http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/lesstif2-dev).

So my question:
Can I install packages from "precise" on my "trusty" system?
How? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2223607 suggests that it is difficult or impossible to downgrade a package to a previous version.
Also I foresee complications. I suppose I'll have to remove libmotif - but that might force removing any application packages that depend on it. But if I try install lesstif2-dev next to libmotif then it will overwrite the files (like Xm/Print.h) that are also in the libmotif packages.

How to run exec bash command from bash script topic

I have a bash script and I want to run commands like these.
First-Command
&& exec bash
&& Last-Command

The exec bash will throw a error in this way.
If I write like this:
First-Command;
exec bash;
Last-Command

The Last-Command doesnt work because of exec bash starting a new thread.

Is there a work around of this scenario?

Can we connect some editor application to a terminal and submit commands to the terminal through that editor application.

Thank You.

Yusuf

lspci -nn -d 14e4:

gives the following:

Code:

09:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5761e Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:1680] (rev 10)
0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)

I ran

Code:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source

and updated and then ran

Code:

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

After a reboot wireless was still not working.

Can anyone offer suggestions? Again, many thanks in advance.

Installing Liberte Linux from Ubuntu topic

I am trying to install Liberte onto a USB stick (I have formatted this as FAT32).

I copied the Liberte zip file and extracted its contents to the USB drive.

I logged in my root account and typed this is the terminal:

/media/q-unit/664B-056B/liberte-2012.3/liberte/setup.sh

the terminal returns bash: /media/q-unit/664B-056B/liberte-2012.3/liberte/setup.sh: Permission denied

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

Accessing external hard drive on lubuntu from windows 7 topic

I have a Lubuntu box setup running Kodi on it. Kodi is reading files from an external hard drive.

I use a windows 7 laptop in day to day use and when I try to access the files on KODIBUNTU (how it is listed in my Windows machine) it gives me mostly empty directories (System & Sounds) a Media directory with a splash.png file in it, a SYSTEM directory with more empty directories, but no access to the external hard drive plugged into the system. I am sure I am missing something simple to get me access to those files, but I don't know what it is.

I want the ability to add/remove files from the external hard drive without having to unplug it from the KODIBUNTU system and plug it into my Windows 7 laptop.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Chris

[lubuntu] how to install a printer HL2030 from Brother with USB interface topic

I am totally new to lubuntu an want to install a Brother printer, HL2030.
The thread "Installing Brother Priners and Scanners Just Got Easier" looks convenient but the type HL2030 is not supported there.

In the Systems menu I selected "add a printer".
Then I had the choice between parallel or serial interface or network interface. But the printer has only a USB interface. Also the laptop has only a USB interface.
So I tried "parallel" hoping that this can be changed later.
Next an equipment URI shall be input.
I have no idea about a suitable URI so I tried both of the two example URI's (ipp://cups-server/printers/printer-queue and
ipp://printer.mydomain/ipp).
After that I could select Brother HL2030 and was happy.
But trying to print the test page resulted in error messages:
With ipp://cups-server/... "unable to locate printer "cups-server" "
With ipp://printer.... "unable to get printer status"

I guess that I need a special URI for the USB interface.
Who can tell me that URI or what else is wrong with my procedure for installation?
