[UbuntuGnome] rsyncd not running with systemd topic

Been running 15.04 under systemd for a week or so without any problems. Noticed that my rsync job on my laptop is failing to connect to the 15.04 desktop. The rsyncd is not running on the desktop. There is what appears to be a valid rsync.service file in /lib/systemd/system which is supposed to start the rsyncd (in fact manually issuing the command returns no errors and the rsyncd runs and the laptop rsync job completes). Check the systemd journal and do not see any indication that the start of the rsync.service job failed. What should I check or try to get the rsyncd running?

[UbuntuGnome] Low definition Video topic

Are there any Ub programs that automatically enhance video definition? I am hoping someone knows of a program than I can run on a video file that will improve its quality and definition by applying some AI rules.

[UbuntuGnome] Toggle Shade / roll up actually minimizes window topic

I'm trying to enable shade / roll up for windows in Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 on Gnome 3.14.
Instead of shading it minimizes the window... except without the minimize animation.

I've used Gnome-Tweak in Windows > Title Bar Actions > Double-click to Toggle Shade
I've also edited dconf: org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.button-layout to :shade,minimize,maximize,close

Clicking on the shade button also minimizes the window without the minimize animation. It just disappears.
(the minimize animation shrinks the window into the upper let corner)

I was hoping the shade / roll up would act like it does in XFCE where the titlebar remains and the window goes into the titlebar.

Sidenote: Does Compiz workin UbuntuGnome? I haven't got anything to work yet...

[UbuntuGnome] UEFI dual-boot grub/boot menu issues topic

Probably not the best title but bear with me while I explain what's going on. I was recently gifted an Intel DB43LD mobo to perform UEFI dual/multi-boot iso-testing. It's a bit long-in-the-tooth (circa 2009) but it'll suffice until I can afford something newer.

So I started by installing Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition in UEFI mode on a GPT formatted drive:

start_point_comp.jpg

I then installed Ubuntu GNOME Trusty in UEFI mode (or at least I think I did based on the live boot menu appearance - black background with white print):

Gpart_dual_boot.jpg

But when I rebooted the box it went right into Windows without displaying any grub menu. I knew though from browsing the BIOS settings previously that pressing F10 would display a boot menu which is a new trick for me so I looked at that boot menu (sadly I didn't think of snapping a pic) but Ubuntu was NOT shown there either.

Next I decided to run Boot Repair using the Trusty live DVD and I was smart enough to grab a boot info summary before trying an actual repair:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/10048056/

I then ran Boot Repair which did end up working (at least partly) and I grabbed another post-repair boot info summary:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/10048113/

Sadly the box still booted straight into Windows but I rebooted again and pressed F10 to display the BIOS boot menu and Ubuntu was now there:

boot_menu.JPG

And if I select Ubuntu the GRUB menu appears and it will boot either Ubuntu GNOME or Windows:

grub_menu.JPG

So it's at least partly fixed but I'd like it to boot Ubuntu Gnome without having to hit F10 and selecting Ubuntu from the BIOS boot menu. Is that possible?

More importantly what went wrong? I thought after several hours of browsing and reading that it was this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...y/+bug/1050940

But shortly after commenting there and reporting it on the QA iso testing tracker it was marked as a duplicate and I now have serious doubts. So I'm a bit lost.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I try to learn the whole UEFI process.

[UbuntuGnome] Call for Testing Ubuntu GNOME Vivid on wayland topic

This popped up on the Ubuntu GNOME QA mailing list yesterday:

Quote:

An experimental GNOME wayland session is now available in vivid. Its not installed by default, however it would still be good to get some
testing, since at some point we will ship this on a standard install.

Some requirements
- You must be using open source drivers (neither AMD or NVIDIA support wayland yet)
- It is probably recommended to be using systemd init [1], although it may work ok with upstart.
- Some features are not quite 100% complete but upstream claim its stable enough for day-to-day use.

To test install gnome-session-wayland package and then select "GNOME on Wayland" from the gdm login menu.

If you file bugs from a wayland session please tag them with "gnome-wayland" so we can easily track them!

There was quickly an amendment to that:

Quote:

Actually better to tag with "wayland-session", ubuntu-bug (apport) will soon auto-tag all bugs filed from within wayland sessions with this.

I've not had time to try it yet because I'm swamped with unrelated bug follow-up procedures but I think it's best to assume that things could totally go kablooey so please test in disposable installations :D

[UbuntuGnome] Poor wired LAN performance via SAMBA on Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 64bit topic

Hey guys,

Bit of an issue that I'm dealing with at the moment. I've recently setup a simple Ubuntu based media PC which doubles as a NAS. Here are my system specs:

Intel C2D 2.6ghz
4gb ddr2
Gigabyte GA-P965- S3
40gb sata boot
2X 3tb sata in ZFS mirror
256gb SSD
PCI Realtek rtl8189 gigabit nic

I get over 180MB/s between the SSD and ZFS array so that's not an issue. However when copying data from my Windows box, which has very fast drives, I can only sustain 30MB/s. On the contrary, with the exact same hardware on Windows, I can sustain 95MB/s no trouble. I have tried a range of Realtek nics and on board chips as well on similar systems and I still can't do better than 30MB/s. Could anyone offer any advice where to go from here? Never had this issue with Ubuntu 12.04, and my RAM and CPU aren't under huge amount of stress.

Thanks in advance :)
