Encrypted Channel Issues - Ceton topic

I have been able to get the Ceton card working with the un-encrypted channels with the install of a cable card. I worked with the guys at the cable company and they have turned on their 'premium' channels for me which include most of the basic channels in HD but they are encrypted. I have tested to make sure they are working within windows media center, but I cannot get them to work on Myth. I receive an error that reads 'Could not read first 2048 bytes...' - From reading around I have read that several people have had luck with the encrypted channels and some say that the cable card wasn't 'setup' correctly.

From the Ceton I see that the for example HistoryHD has the copy flag set to 'One copy' rather than 'copy freely' like the clear channels. Also, I can see that myth does change the channel but in the logs I see 'Channel is scrambled, expecting CCI'

Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated!

[xubuntu] HP G7000 laptop facing a couple of wireless issues topic

Good evening wireless gurus.

Let me start saying that I'm using the "Try Xubuntu" option of today's image on a HP G7000 laptop. This is not a installed system.

My first issue related to the fact that everytime I boot the laptop the wireless button is orange, meaning that my wireless is hard-blocked, and no matter pressing the button will turn it on. The only way I have to turn it on is by rebooting into windows, and once at the windows login, I'm then able to press the button and it will turn on.
I've google this to exhaustion to no avail.

The other issue I'm facing relates to the fact that I'm not getting any wireless networks signals. In fact the network indicator/applet only shows the wired one (and yes the led on the wireless button is blue, meaning it is turned on)/

Here's what I have done so far

Code:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43

But still nothing.

Here's some output I think you might need

Code:

xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ grep 'blacklist b43' /etc/modprobe.d/*
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$

xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ lsmod | grep -e b43 -e wl

[lubuntu] Keyboard layout issues: no effect when changing settings in lxkeymap topic

One of the recent updates (~ 1.5 weeks) has totally screwed up my previous keyboard layout.
Still worse, I can't seem to REMOVE what's pre-set in there.

I've always loved the variant to have the ever-useless CAPS LOCK as "Compose" key.
However, by some magic the "shift_caps_toggle" option was added (it was not there before), and now is obviously blocking Caps Lock from working the way I want it!

I've tried everything imaginable to get the "grp:shift_caps_toggle" option removed from the layout, but it just does not work.

Plus, I've tried to grep for this option to be configured anywhere, to no avail.

Though not recommended, I even removed the "shift_caps_toggle" option from ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels/panel, but now look:

Code:

andy@andy-lubuntubox:~$ lxkeymap -a
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/lxkeymap/helpers.py:46: GtkWarning: Unknown property: GtkMenu.ubuntu-local
  builder.add_from_file(ui_filename)
Sections: ['Global']
Layouts: ['us']
Variants: ['', '']
Options: ['grp:shift_caps_toggle']
['Global']
['compose:caps']
Lxkeymap autostart running...

Ehh??
Where else does lxkeymap (which is a Python script, by the way) pull that Options line from?
For a moment, I've even thought of a random variable which was not cleared (like in C, when you don't initialize a string variable, it might display some random garbage)

Sometimes lxkeymap recently complains that it is unable to save current settings. Hmmm...

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit wifi issues with RTL8191SEvA topic

Hi, I just installed 14.04 LTS 64-bit on an HP G62 and the wifi keeps dropping.

Attached is the output from the wireless_script.

I tried a few things but I suspect I have the wrong driver. I see the drivers in use don't match the model exactly:

Code:

##### lspci #############################

Many thanks for your help !

Atheros AR93xx: Wifi issues on 14.04 topic

I apologize if this has been asked before and I did find some related posts but none of them got me a solution.
So I built a new desktop and my wifi on 14.04 seems to be really inconsistent (keeps getting disconnected) and slow. I'm dual booting my machine and I consistently get 1/8th of the speed I get on windows.

My network adapter is TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 (Amazon link)

The machine detects the hardware (bolded in last line):

[xubuntu] Issues connecting with wifi, Realtek RTL8188CU USB card topic

Hello, I am fairly ignorant when it comes to Linux. I'm attempting to keep WinXP on my PC for offline programs and using Xubuntu for when I need to get online.

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 LTS on a USB drive, but the internet is slow and very unreliable. It works great when I'm using Windows XP, but not so good when I'm in Xubuntu. Not sure if the driver Xubuntu selected is not adequate, or if there's something else going on.

When I am using Windows XP, it shows my USB Wifi as rtl8188CU in Realtek's Wireless LAN Utility.

After searching the forums, I found a post that is similar to my issue, but it looks like it's aimed at advanced users (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...hlight=rtl8188). He lost me at "Next I plugged the 8188CUs device in and ran 'lsmod' noting which modules were loaded..."

I did manage to run a few codes and put the output here to see if that helps.

If there's another post out there that provides baby steps on how to fix this for noobs like me then I'd appreciate the link. I didn't see anything like that in my search.

Thanks a bunch!

RAID5 recovery issues topic

Home server running Ubuntu Server edition went down last weekend. Power supply failure.

After installing a new power supply and reboot, I noticed I lost my RAID5 array (4x 1TB drives). Upon closer inspection, I noticed that two of the drives showed faulty. Checking the drives individually the drives did not appear to be faulty.

Admittedly, I am rusty working with RAID arrays. I don't use linux much any more at work and this is my home setup. I'm perfectly good at searching all over Google-dom, as I have, but it appears I may have made some mistakes here so this is my last ditch effort to find a solution for data recovery. Thankfully the *most* important data that was on the array was backed up, but half of it (non-critical but would like to have back) was not.

So when I went to re-mount the RAID array, it no longer existed.

I used mdadm to examine the drives, here is what I found:

As I checked two of the other drives, they claimed that two of the disks in the middle (/dev/sdc1 and /dev/sda1) were faulty.

I searched and searched. Ultimately I went with trying to re-assemble the array with the following command:

Code:

sudo mdadm --create /dev/md0 -v -l 5 -n 4 /dev/sd[bcae]1

It then rebuilt the array. I should mention that while I re-installed the power supply, I had to unplug some of the SATA cords and reinstall them. They may have not been re-connected in the same original order. However, I assumed that mdadm was smart enough to recognize which drives went in which order. Maybe I was wrong? Anyhow, after I ran my command, I noticed that mdadm began assembling the array in a different order than I prescribed in the command.

I got this:

Since it took a while to rebuild, I went to bed. Then, the next morning I woke up and tried to see if I could remount the drive. No luck. No filesystem found (should have been ext4). Tried running fsck but nothing was found. Also tried e2fsck, etc.

Then I remembered something. I vaguely remembered when building the array several years ago (yes this array has been running for several years with no failures) that I think I might have used 128k chunk sizes. I noticed the newly re-assembled array was 64k.

Now I have the sinking feeling that I may have hosed the array. At any rate, I'm lost and don't know what else can be done, if anything.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help!

[ubuntu] VPN Issues topic

Greetings:

I have a site to site VPN setup between my primary location, and an off-site location using OpenSwan. Traffic from here to there seems to work fine for a Windows 2003R2 server, and a CentOS guest that work just fine. I can SSH from the CentOS server to an Ubuntu 12.04 server on my "local" network no problem.

I am running into issues with connecting anything TCP based from my local network to Ubuntu 12.04 servers on the remote network. These seem to be the only servers I have issues with.

I can ping the servers no problem, even with large packets.

I cannot do anything involving TCP to them from my local site. If I am on one of the CentOS guests on the remote site, I have no issue connecting to the Ubuntu servers through SSH or any other TCP protocol.

I'm really stumped! I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks in advance,
Richard

[UbuntuGnome] UEFI dual-boot grub/boot menu issues topic

Probably not the best title but bear with me while I explain what's going on. I was recently gifted an Intel DB43LD mobo to perform UEFI dual/multi-boot iso-testing. It's a bit long-in-the-tooth (circa 2009) but it'll suffice until I can afford something newer.

So I started by installing Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition in UEFI mode on a GPT formatted drive:

start_point_comp.jpg

I then installed Ubuntu GNOME Trusty in UEFI mode (or at least I think I did based on the live boot menu appearance - black background with white print):

Gpart_dual_boot.jpg

But when I rebooted the box it went right into Windows without displaying any grub menu. I knew though from browsing the BIOS settings previously that pressing F10 would display a boot menu which is a new trick for me so I looked at that boot menu (sadly I didn't think of snapping a pic) but Ubuntu was NOT shown there either.

Next I decided to run Boot Repair using the Trusty live DVD and I was smart enough to grab a boot info summary before trying an actual repair:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/10048056/

I then ran Boot Repair which did end up working (at least partly) and I grabbed another post-repair boot info summary:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/10048113/

Sadly the box still booted straight into Windows but I rebooted again and pressed F10 to display the BIOS boot menu and Ubuntu was now there:

boot_menu.JPG

And if I select Ubuntu the GRUB menu appears and it will boot either Ubuntu GNOME or Windows:

grub_menu.JPG

So it's at least partly fixed but I'd like it to boot Ubuntu Gnome without having to hit F10 and selecting Ubuntu from the BIOS boot menu. Is that possible?

More importantly what went wrong? I thought after several hours of browsing and reading that it was this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...y/+bug/1050940

But shortly after commenting there and reporting it on the QA iso testing tracker it was marked as a duplicate and I now have serious doubts. So I'm a bit lost.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I try to learn the whole UEFI process.

[ubuntu] Rosewill RNX-AC1200UBE2 Driver Issues topic

Hey everyone!

I'm don't usually find myself posting to ask for help, but I've put quite a few hours into this problem with no progress.
I'm also not the most experienced with Linux based operating systems, so please bear with me, and explain things like I only have rudimentary knowledge of the terminal.

I have a Rosewill RNX-AC1200UBE2 wireless adapter that is not recognized when plugged into any USB port on my computer. I tried downloading and installing the drivers on the Rosewill site, but the Makefile always fails with several errors. I am running Ubuntu 14.10, and my kernel is 3.16.0-30-generic. Any help would be appreciated, and I'll be here to answer any question that can help.

[ubuntu] Firewire stability issues with Ubuntu on Mac Mini mid 2007 (sbp2_scsi_abort) topic

Hi!

I am new on this forum but not completely new with Linux. I was playing around with Ubuntu years ago. Loved it but ended up going Apple instead. Just recently re-discovered Linux when I realized I need a home server for files, backups, media etc... Took a few days of research and reading but now I got the server up and running the way I planned, and I'm simply having a blast with Linux :).

However, I have an issue with my Firewire interface. A quite serious issue, and to my big surprise, Google doesn't seem to have the answer this time :O.

My Mac Mini has a few USB 2.0 ports and a Firewire 400 port, so I obviously want to connect all my hard drives to the Firewire port. This works fine at first, but after some time the drives just "disappears", resulting in obvious /IO errors.

I have tried with two different enclosures - same thing. However, connecting only ONE drive seems to work OK. But once I connect another drive, and do some copying between them, either one of them, or both, will "disappear" eventually. I have not found a way yet to restart the firewire bus, so what I do is simply unmount both drives, turn off the power, turn them back on and re-mount them. If I connect the drives via USB instead they run for days without any problems at all.

Since this problem occurs with all the Firewire equipment I currently can test with I suppose there is something on the Mac Mini that's causing problems, or perhaps the 1394 driver in Linux.

I would truly appreciate some help on what to do next here! My setup is kind of useless without Firewire capabilities - running all my drives on USB 2.0 sounds like a nightmare :D.

Some info :

And today's syslog for everything regarding Firewire (I think...). The key seems to be the "sbp2_scsi_abort" as it always appears when I get this error (only happened one time today though).
