[xubuntu] Folder permission for multiple users topic

I live in a living community and I have setup a local machine (Ubuntu Server 14.04) with the purpose to serve media files over Plex to my devices.

Now my friends would like to also use Plex because they like it very much and want to contribute new media files.

This means that they have to get access to my Media folder. The problem is that all new created folders containing new media stuff still have the specific user as owner so that another user can't complete the TV shows etc. of another user.

What I did:

  1. Created 4 new users accounts (one for each community member)
  2. Created a new group "mediamember"
  3. Added all new user accounts to the group "mediamember" inlcuding the user plex and my account
  4. Changed the groupowner of my Media folder to the new group "mediamember". I did it recursive so all the subfolders would get the new groupowner.

And this scenario does not work (more detailed):

One of the new users wants to add a new TV Show:

1) One of the new users logs in via remote desktop (xubuntu-desktop over x2go)

2) He opens a folder on his desktop which is a symbolic link to my "Media" folder

3) There he is going to the "TV Shows" folder

4) There he creates a new folder with the name "Name of a tv show"

5) He goes into the new folder and creates a new folder called "Season 1"

6) He uploads *.mkv files which does NOT cover all episodes of "Season 1"

7) Other user wants to complete the episodes but he can't create new episodes because he has no rights.

Like I allready mentioned I think it has something to do with the problem that every new created folder and file still have the user specific group and rights.

I would like to have all new created folders and files with the group "mediammeber" as owner so that everybody has the rights to contribute and organise the media files.

Google says it might have to do something with umask. However I did not understand the concept of umask.

Can anybody help?

Thank you very much!

Simple Event Correlator - Multiple instances topic

Hi everybody :)

Im hopeing that somebody out here have some tips and clues for me...

I've installed SEC into my system, and have setup the config files. I have successfully been able to watch over a logfile and print the results of the expected pattern.
But, I want to have multiple instances of SEC running.. Why, well, beq then I can have separate logfiles, pid-files and config for each logfile I want SEC to check. That makes it alot easier when you are creating context's and rules when you can followup in seperate logfiles. Much more efficient.

Here is my Dilemma:
in /etc/default/sec (for RedHat/CentOS this is /etc/sysconfig/sec), I want to add more DAEMON_ARGS to the file:

Code:

#Defaults for sec
RUN_DAEMON="yes"
DAEMON_ARGS="-conf=/etc/sec/sec.fail2ban.conf -input=/var/log/fail2ban.log -pid=/var/run/sec.fail2ban.pid -detach -debug=6 -syslog=daemon -log=/var/log/sec.fail2ban.log"

In CentOS, this can easy be achived by adding more "ARGS" to the line, like this:

Code:

SEC_ARGS[0]="-detach -conf=/etc/sec/sys/*.sec -input=/var/log/messages -log=/var/log/sec -intevents -pid=/var/run/sec.sys.pid"
SEC_ARGS[1]="-detach -conf=/etc/sec/mail/*.sec -input=/var/log/messages -log=/var/log/sec -intevents -pid=/var/run/sec.mail.pid"

Why doesn't this work with Ubuntu server?
I have tried multiple solutions and the end result is that the startup script says: "file not found" when added

Code:

DAEMON_ARGS[0]="-conf=xxxxxx
DAEMON_ARGS[1]="-conf=xxxxx

and so on.

I have also tryed varibles like this:

Code:

DAEMON_ARGS_1
DAEMON_ARGS_[1]
DAEMON_ARGS_sometext

...but none of them are successfull..

Is there anyone out here that have set this up successfully and wouldn't mind giving me the recipe?

Some details about the OS:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release: 14.04
Codename: trusty

SEC (Simple Event Correlator) 2.7.5

[ubuntu] Unpacking with unrar: multiple rar-archives with multiple passwords topic

Hello everybody, I want to unpack a couple of rar archived documents that have multiple passwords. I usually do this in the terminal with the command:

find '/home/USER/Dokumente' -name '*.rar' -execdir unrar x -p'PASSWORD' -o- -kb -y {} '*txt' '*.pdf' \;

But in this case i only use one password.
So lets say I want to include the 2 passwords '123' and 'abc'

How does the syntax need to look like?
-p'123' -p'abc'
does not work

Thanks in advance

Saving of Multiple Monitor Screen Positions topic

Is there a way for Ubuntu to save off the screen positions in a multiple monitor setup?

I am running VirtualBox with Guest Additions installed. I have three monitors. Everytime I run Ubuntu 14.04, the screen windows do not position themselves correctly. Ideally, I would like a way to save these positions off so that next time I run Ubuntu, they come up in the right order and position.

how to combine multiple CSVs into one xls workbook as separate tabs command line topic

I figure I'll ask the question here, even though it's probably better suited for a site like superuser or VMUG.

Specifically here is what I'm doing. I administer a few thousand virtual machines spread out over a total of 8 ESXi hosts (clusters). I need to generate some reports weekly which is a very tedious process that I'm trying to automate. I've got it now (with the assistance of some bash scripts I wrote using cygwin) to where it generates the reports for each server split up into 7 separate CSV files.
What I need to accomplish now is to somehow batch convert those separate csv files into one Excel workbook, each CSV being a separate tab within the excel workbook. And I need it to be something I can automate, ie; via command line.
