Second monitor stuck sideways in 14.04.1 Unity

Tried fixing this through System Settings > Displays

But the only options available for the Rotation option are “Counterclockwise” and “Clockwise.” No “Normal” option is available.

This second monitor is a SHARP X Flat TV.

The Displays setting utility names this second monitor as “Unknown Display.”

Clicking the “Detect Displays” button in the Displays setting utility changes nothing.

The signal for this second monitor is routed through a home theater receiver/amp before it reaches the TV.

The first monitor is a TOSHIBA TV/VGA Monitor thing and the Display settings utility names it specifically and correctly.

The computer is an HP Media Center PC m7250n desktop – dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 14.04.1. (Of course the dual monitor setup works perfectly in Windows XP.)

The video output is via a PCI video card.

So, is there a way to get my second monitor normalized?

[P.S. Why did the Ubuntu folk design the second monitor function to output sideways only for unknown monitors? Like, wouldn't “Normal” have been a better default for that? Geeeeez.]

Some time within the next few days I need to perform quite a bit of follow-up testing to help squash this bug:

It affects Vivid, Utopic, and 14.04.2 (Trusty with the Utopic HWE stack). One of the big hang-ups for me is that's my HTPC (nothing fancy but I have no TV so it's my only source of entertainment aside from a small AM/FM radio) and it's also not in an ergonomic friendly location. So sometime in the next day or two I want to temporarily swap that computer into my testing suite (two PC's sharing peripherals with a KVM switch) and use another PC for streaming. I've already added some additional storage (a second hard drive) to that streaming box so I'll be able to turn it into a multi-boot box easily for testing.

I have a dumb question though :redface:

The biggest change will be going from a 21.5" widescreen monitor running @ 1920x1080 down to an 18.5" monitor running @ 1366x768. The current "stable" OS is Trusty and a recent kernel update breaks nouveau (that bug) but nvidia-current is fine. Naturally I'd like to NOT break the "stable" OS.

So if I were to boot the "stable" OS with the nvidia drivers enabled would the nvidia driver automatically handle the monitor change? Or would it be better to change to the nouveau driver before the swap? I guess the latter would be the safest way to go because I know I can boot nouveau using the "nouveau.config=NvMSI=0" boot parameter.

Any thoughts? Always better to ask a dumb question rather than make a dumb mistake, eh?

how to shift the display on the monitor? topic

I just installed Mint 17 on my desktop PC.
Up to now there are no real problems. But the display on my monitor is shifted to the right so that only half of the icons on the left edge are visible.

My monitor is a Medion Flat Pro but Ubuntu recognized a Messeltronic Dresden 19" monitor.

How can I set the correct monitor type or shift the display some pixels to the right?

With a solution to this minor problem Mint would be wonderful.;)

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 14.04 stuck at 640x480 dell s2009wb monitor topic

I plugged my Dell s2009wb monitor into a Linux Ubuntu 14.04 computer and it says it failed all resolution tests and told me it will be set at 640x480. the monitor is capable of 1600x900 and all the resolutions that failed, worked on all Windows versions that monitor has been hooked up to, everything from Windows 98, XP, & 7. XP even included it's native 1600x900 resolution but Ubuntu doesn't like my monitor for some reason

How can I remedy this?

I searched the software center for both "dell monitor" and "s2009wb" and both got "no results" I go into software updates and additional drivers, it says "no proprietary drives are in use" and "No additional drivers are available"

setting/display only shows 640x480 or the other 480p 16:9 & 16:10 variants

Ubuntu worked fine with 1280x1024 on an older monitor that this replaced.

Application to Monitor Logs, system freezes topic

Hello,

I've been having some random freezing problems on my Ubuntu 14.10 installation. I've been patching as soon as things come out and this has seemed to have been introduced since the installation about two months ago, give or take. So, I've been noticing some content within the syslog that looks odd.

I don't know what is causing the above or even if it is related with the freezing. I have noticed though, that my Logitech M705 mouse freezes first. I can still use the touchpad for about 1 minute, and then the system freezes altogether. So, I suppose that is a starting point.

Any help would be appreciative, especially if there is some sort of monitor tool that will help identify issues with the system in general.

Saving of Multiple Monitor Screen Positions topic

Is there a way for Ubuntu to save off the screen positions in a multiple monitor setup?

I am running VirtualBox with Guest Additions installed. I have three monitors. Everytime I run Ubuntu 14.04, the screen windows do not position themselves correctly. Ideally, I would like a way to save these positions off so that next time I run Ubuntu, they come up in the right order and position.
