[xubuntu] Folder permission for multiple users topic

I live in a living community and I have setup a local machine (Ubuntu Server 14.04) with the purpose to serve media files over Plex to my devices.

Now my friends would like to also use Plex because they like it very much and want to contribute new media files.

This means that they have to get access to my Media folder. The problem is that all new created folders containing new media stuff still have the specific user as owner so that another user can't complete the TV shows etc. of another user.

What I did:

  1. Created 4 new users accounts (one for each community member)
  2. Created a new group "mediamember"
  3. Added all new user accounts to the group "mediamember" inlcuding the user plex and my account
  4. Changed the groupowner of my Media folder to the new group "mediamember". I did it recursive so all the subfolders would get the new groupowner.

And this scenario does not work (more detailed):

One of the new users wants to add a new TV Show:

1) One of the new users logs in via remote desktop (xubuntu-desktop over x2go)

2) He opens a folder on his desktop which is a symbolic link to my "Media" folder

3) There he is going to the "TV Shows" folder

4) There he creates a new folder with the name "Name of a tv show"

5) He goes into the new folder and creates a new folder called "Season 1"

6) He uploads *.mkv files which does NOT cover all episodes of "Season 1"

7) Other user wants to complete the episodes but he can't create new episodes because he has no rights.

Like I allready mentioned I think it has something to do with the problem that every new created folder and file still have the user specific group and rights.

I would like to have all new created folders and files with the group "mediammeber" as owner so that everybody has the rights to contribute and organise the media files.

Google says it might have to do something with umask. However I did not understand the concept of umask.

Can anybody help?

Thank you very much!

[xubuntu] HP G7000 laptop facing a couple of wireless issues topic

Good evening wireless gurus.

Let me start saying that I'm using the "Try Xubuntu" option of today's image on a HP G7000 laptop. This is not a installed system.

My first issue related to the fact that everytime I boot the laptop the wireless button is orange, meaning that my wireless is hard-blocked, and no matter pressing the button will turn it on. The only way I have to turn it on is by rebooting into windows, and once at the windows login, I'm then able to press the button and it will turn on.
I've google this to exhaustion to no avail.

The other issue I'm facing relates to the fact that I'm not getting any wireless networks signals. In fact the network indicator/applet only shows the wired one (and yes the led on the wireless button is blue, meaning it is turned on)/

Here's what I have done so far

Code:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43

But still nothing.

Here's some output I think you might need

Code:

xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ grep 'blacklist b43' /etc/modprobe.d/*

VNC on Xubuntu topic

Hello all

First time with Linux.

I have followed the instructions on the guide here:
http://robot.wpi.edu/wiki/index.php/...ntu_VNC_Server

I am to the line that says "Turbo VNC" after "Automatically Start The Server"
I am unable to log into Xubuntu from either a Mac (10.6.8) using Chicken of the VNC or Windows 7 using TightVNC.
I left the port alone at first then changed it to 5907 since I have another machine on the network using 5901 and thought maybe an issue and still nothing.
This is all being tested internal on the same lan, not from the outside.

On either Mac or Windows clients am usig 10.0.0.10:5907 (and 10.0.0.10:5901 prior to changing the port)

My IPs are:
xUbuntu = 10.0.0.10
Mac = 10.0.0.33
Windows = 10.0.0.201
All are on the same LAN: 10.0.0.0/24

I dont know if I have to setup the TurboVNC part but if do I dont understand how to do that.
All it says on the guide is:

/opt/TurboVNC/bin/vncserver &

I looked in /opt/ and there is no TurboVNC directory so I tried typing that in to the terminal and got:

maurice@DellE5500:~$ /opt/TurboVNC/bin/vncserver &
[1] 3437
bash: /opt/TurboVNC/bin/vncserver: No such file or directory
maurice@DellE5500:~$

So am thinking I need to install TurboVNC?????
How do I do that?

My current start up script at /etc/init/x11vnc.conf:
start on login-session-start
script
x11vnc -xkb -noxrecord -noxfixes -noxdamage -display :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -forever -shared -bg -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -rfbauth /etc/x11vnc.pass -rfbport 5907 -localhost
end script

And right before changing to port 5907:
start on login-session-start
script
x11vnc -xkb -noxrecord -noxfixes -noxdamage -display :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -forever -shared -bg -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -rfbauth /etc/x11vnc.pass -rfbport 5901 -localhost
end script

and I have restarted the computer and let it both log in to the desktop as well as left it at the login screen.

Thanks much in advance

Maurice

[xubuntu] Partition Misalignment by 1024 bytes topic

Hello,

My Disk Utility says that my extended partition is misaligned by 1024 bytes. I have in /dev/sda2 999gb with /dev/sda5/ (ext4, 35 gb) and /dev/sda6/ (ext4, 964 gb) inside it. With a swap partition at the end, /dev/sda1.

I had a motherboard death on this thing and bought a new motherboard after several months. I never had this message before and am not sure when it appeared after the MOBO replacement. Now, what I find really odd, is that now my supposed SWAP partition (/dev/sda1) is bootable?! What the heck is with that.

If some one can tell me how to neatly post the output of the boot info script I will do so. It was a mess when I just tried it.

I just cannot afford to reformat the drive and don't have the time to back up all the data on it in a way that wouldn't result in the same error (cloning the drive). I am wrapping up a PhD and there is no way in hell I am going to bother with this unless I absolutely have to, but I am worried about it. Should I be?

Thanks,

AlphaA

[xubuntu] Questions on pulseaudio and A2DP topic

There are two questions I'd like to ask guys and I'd appreciate it if you could help on either or both of them.

1. There are these options in pulseaudio's daemon.conf file
; default-sample-format = s16le
; default-sample-rate = 44100
; alternate-sample-rate = 48000
Do those settings tell pulseaudio that it should always resample all incoming audio to match those values no matter what, before it sends the sound to the sound card OR do they instruct pulseaudio to use these values as maximum settings and only downsample incoming audio if it exceeds them and keep the sound attributes as they are if they are <= to the shown values?

2. I want to use my Xubuntu computer as an A2DP receiver and I am using he following settings in my bluetooth "audio.conf" file:
[General]
Enable=Source,Sink,Headset,Gateway,Control,Media,S ocket
AutoConnect=true
[Headset]
HFP=false
MaxConnected=1
FastConnectable=false
[A2DP]
SBCSources=1
MPEG12Sources=0

I have also installed pulseaudio-module-bluetooth.

The computer connects successfully to my Android 4.4 phone using Blueman and music is streamed normally from the phone to the computer but there's absolutely no way for me to find the phone in pulseaudio sources or inputs so that I can route the incoming audio to the computer's speakers. There's something missing and I can't find what it is. All the instructions I've found so far assume that the bluetooth source is listed in pulseaudio sources which is exactly the issue. It's not there.

Thanks in advance... ;)

[xubuntu] Operating System not Found topic

Hi
I've Xbuntu installed on a 128GB SSD that boots and runs without issue on my desktop. (Even on its own with all other drives disconnected)
I want to now use it in my laptop (preferably) without reinstalling the OS. I have set SATA mode to ACHI in the BIOS and although the PC sees the disk, I receive a " Operating System not Found" error during boot.
Below is the output of my boot-repair dump. I have run the repair several times but it has unfortunately not (yet) been successful in resolving the issue. There is / was no dual booting of any kind going on. Any suggestions very much appreciated, thanks.

[xubuntu] xubuntu 14.04 installation - menuLibre topic

Just installed xubuntu 14.04

Its very nice overall and makes my machine feel faster.

However, there are a few little annoyances am trying to smooth. One of them is that it doesn't let me alter MenuLibre. Strange no?

I use the Menu editor from the settings manager.
It doesn't save when am changing categories on/off.
It doesn't let me delete launchers. (eg the default mail launcher can not be deleted.)
Am logged in as admin, btw..

Here's the MenuLibre .desktop file contents - in case it might help somehow??

[Desktop Entry] Name=Menu Editor Comment=Add or remove applications from the menu Exec=/usr/bin/menulibre Terminal=false Type=Application StartupNotify=true Categories=GNOME;Settings;DesktopSettings;Utility; Keywords=Configuration;Menu;User; Icon=menulibre X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=menulibre

Any ideas?

Cheers and many thanks in advance!

[xubuntu] Stylus lifebook makes some signs during the writing topic

Hi,
I've got a Fujitsu lifebook T4220 64 bit bought second-hand but it was barely used.
Now it works perfectly good with xubuntu 14.04 and kernel 3.13.0-45.

Then I installed Magick Rotation in order to use my lifebook as tablet with Xournal.
So far so good. I can write beautiful documents and I'm very pleased of this buy.

There is only a little issue.

When I write in tablet mode, I put a wedge under my pc so that it is tilted towards me. I never write using the pen perpendicular to the monitor - the angle between pen and monitor is about 70-90 degrees. Further, because I'm right-handed, the pen is also inclined towards right. I write much the way the others do. Simply think I'm writing on an inclined plane.

The pen is the original lifebook stylus. Sometimes it makes some "smudge" when I lift the pointer. Just to fix the ideas with an example: I finish to write a word, then I lift the pen, but it continues to write until the pointer is quite a long away from the monitor. The result is a long sign after the word.
But, if I turn the pen halfway, along its axis, and rewrite, in the same area of the monitor, it works good.

Unfortunately there isn't a standard "rotation". Sometimes, in that particular area of the monitor, it works if its two buttons point towards my hand, sometimes, in another area, it works if its two buttons point outwards.

Do you think it's a stylus or a monitor problem?

Thanks

[xubuntu] Alt-f2 to open "run application" not working anymore topic

Since a while the keyboard shortcut alt-f2 to open the "run application" doesn't work anymore. Nothing happens. When I look in the keyboard settings, under shortcuts, I see that alt-f2 is correctly mapped to xfrun4. However when I edit the keyboard shortcut I can't enter "alt-f2". I don't get an error but the key combi is just not accepted. My guess is there is a conflict and that key combi is already in use somewhere else. However I checked all shortcuts I could find (also in the window manager settings) and can't find any other alt-f2 occurrences. BTW, alt-f3 and other key shortcuts still work.

I already tried resetting all shortcuts to default, and also deleting all my user settings (all hidden . dirs like ~/.config/ etc) and logging out & in again but the problem persists. I'm at the point of doing a clean reinstall (I really use xfrun4 a lot) but I'm hoping there's a simpler solution... ok I could map it to another key combi but that seems not a fix but a workaround.

I'm running xubuntu 14.04.1 with all updates installed. Thanks for any help!

[xubuntu] Xubuntu splash cryptsetup message is no longer displayed at boot time topic

Question about Xubuntu and cryptsetup I noticed the other day that the usual boot up Xubuntu splash cryptsetup message is no longer displayed. Is there a problem? how can I test to verify that the encryption process is active and working ?

[xubuntu] Setting window positions with wmctrl topic

This is on Xubuntu 14.04.1 LTS

I'm trying to automate certain aspects of my work setup, where I use several different apps and want them distributed over my screen real estate in a certain way.

I've found wmctrl and some example scripts that use it. Unfortunately wmctrl is very erratic and will sometimes work and sometimes not, which is obviously very frustrating.

So I'm looking for help: Is there a way to make wmctrl work properly? Are there alternatives? What do others do in my situation?

ubuntu wifi works, xubuntu does not topic

my toshiba laptop satellite L15W-B1302 has a Realtek wireless RTL8723BE PCIe adapter. when i installed ubuntu 14.04 it worked automatically. but i prefer xfce, so in installed xubuntu 14.04 on another partition, but xubuntu did not install the driver. and since the laptop has no internet, i cannot download or install anything until the wifi works, unless a usb flash drive will work. so, the question is: can i copy the ubuntu drivers from their partition to the xubuntu install? i can boot to either and mount the un-booted filesystem, so can i just copy some files? if so, where would i look? thanks in advance for any advice.

[xubuntu] Thunar customized action with sudo doesn't work topic

Hi all,

I love thunar's customized actions and I think it's very usefull.

My problem is I'm unable to make any action using sudo. I want to add to the folders a customized action called "Open as administrator", it is, a customized action with "sudo thunar %f", but it does just nothing. If I write "thunar %f" it works but of course it's unusefull at all since the important is opening with sudo.

I mean, system simply ignore or at least apparently ignore the sudo when I would like it to request the admin password and then opening as root. I've read many many how-to's over the internet using this "sudo thunar %f" as example for customized actions but doesn't work for me.

Any help?

Regards and thanks in advance

[xubuntu] (12.04) Reverting back to older Intel drivers topic

I'm running xubuntu 12.04 on an old Amilo M 7400 with 512MB RAM and an Intel 855GM graphics card.
I'd like to revert back to an older intel driver that is capable of using "AccelMethod" "xaa".

I noticed this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTart...telDriverTo2.4

Is there some way to this with xubuntu 12.04?
As far as I know "xaa" support has been removed from the intel driver with 2.8 so I need an older version;)

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

[xubuntu] desktop items re-positioning on reboot topic

My desktop items always used to stay where I put them, but just lately they have been re-setting themselves to top left when I re-boot the computer. How can I go back to having them stay in the position I move them to? Xubuntu 14.4.01 and XCFE 4.

Thanks, Ray

[xubuntu] Mouse freezing repeatedly after upgrade to utopic topic

I recently upgraded to Xubuntu 14.10 from Xubuntu 14.04 using the graphical upgrade tool. Ever since this upgrade was complete, my wired USB mouse periodically freezes up and the only way to fix it is to pull the USB plug. Usually, it freezes again within half an hour. The mouse and keyboard actually attach to a USB hub integrated in my monitor; the hub is attached to a USB port in the rear of my workstation.

This is an eight year old Dell Precision 490 workstation. I installed Xubuntu 7.04 on it when I got it. I've been upgrading for every Xubuntu release since then, so this was the fifteenth upgrade and the first time I've ever seen this sort of problem. I've tried analyzing the dmesg output, the /var/log/Xorg* files, and the /var/log/syslog* files... I can see the mouse get registered on the system and I can see it get reregistered if I pull loose the USB hub and reconnect it, but none of these sources seem to register any error with the mouse after it freezes up. I've tried reloading the psmouse driver after the mouse freezes up (as my keyboard is not having any problems) and that does not resolve the issue. I downgraded the kernel to the previous version; no love. (Maybe I needed to go further back with the kernel?)

This feels like a bug, but it's hard to even know how to file a bug report against this... Looking for any help on finding information or relating this to a known bug. I've never been this frustrated with Linux before!

[xubuntu] Issues connecting with wifi, Realtek RTL8188CU USB card topic

Hello, I am fairly ignorant when it comes to Linux. I'm attempting to keep WinXP on my PC for offline programs and using Xubuntu for when I need to get online.

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 LTS on a USB drive, but the internet is slow and very unreliable. It works great when I'm using Windows XP, but not so good when I'm in Xubuntu. Not sure if the driver Xubuntu selected is not adequate, or if there's something else going on.

When I am using Windows XP, it shows my USB Wifi as rtl8188CU in Realtek's Wireless LAN Utility.

After searching the forums, I found a post that is similar to my issue, but it looks like it's aimed at advanced users (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...hlight=rtl8188). He lost me at "Next I plugged the 8188CUs device in and ran 'lsmod' noting which modules were loaded..."

I did manage to run a few codes and put the output here to see if that helps.

If there's another post out there that provides baby steps on how to fix this for noobs like me then I'd appreciate the link. I didn't see anything like that in my search.

Thanks a bunch!

[xubuntu] Positioning application window with xfwm4 topic

xubuntu 14.10
xfce4 4.10
xfwm 4.11.2
vlc 2.2.0

When launching the VLC Media Player, the xfwm4 window manager determines its location. This application does not support the X11 --geometry option, nor does it have any other positioning option. Is there any other method I can use to force the resulting VLC window to a open at a specific screen position? Thanks.
