[all variants] "3G only" feature does not work. topic

hello!
i am facing an issue: the 3g only feature of broadband network manager does not work. it always stays on "3g preferred". this is a big problem since there are o lot of places with a weak but usable 3g signal. in such a situation, the modem (zte k3565z, huawei e3131) jumps on EDGE/GPRS.
i have found that i must sent some kind of command to the modem but i do not know how. here is what i found:
https://wiki.debian.org/Modem/3G/Vodafone

any help would be much appreciated.

[all variants] Monitor swap for bug follow-up / nVidia or nouveau? topic

Some time within the next few days I need to perform quite a bit of follow-up testing to help squash this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...u/+bug/1412602

It affects Vivid, Utopic, and 14.04.2 (Trusty with the Utopic HWE stack). One of the big hang-ups for me is that's my HTPC (nothing fancy but I have no TV so it's my only source of entertainment aside from a small AM/FM radio) and it's also not in an ergonomic friendly location. So sometime in the next day or two I want to temporarily swap that computer into my testing suite (two PC's sharing peripherals with a KVM switch) and use another PC for streaming. I've already added some additional storage (a second hard drive) to that streaming box so I'll be able to turn it into a multi-boot box easily for testing.

I have a dumb question though

The biggest change will be going from a 21.5" widescreen monitor running @ 1920x1080 down to an 18.5" monitor running @ 1366x768. The current "stable" OS is Trusty and a recent kernel update breaks nouveau (that bug) but nvidia-current is fine. Naturally I'd like to NOT break the "stable" OS.

So if I were to boot the "stable" OS with the nvidia drivers enabled would the nvidia driver automatically handle the monitor change? Or would it be better to change to the nouveau driver before the swap? I guess the latter would be the safest way to go because I know I can boot nouveau using the "nouveau.config=NvMSI=0" boot parameter.

Any thoughts? Always better to ask a dumb question rather than make a dumb mistake, eh?

[all variants] application menu generation topic

So in my never-ending quest to build a truly perfect system I've tried window managers and desktop environments and one of the key advantages the latter has over the former, at least for a user as un-skilled as me, is having a good pre-built app menu.

I don't know how to explain, in window managers you have the example X applications like X-eyes and X-mag while a desktop environmente hides those and already comes with all the stuff you've installed. More importantly window managers don't always have shutdown options.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of trick to make Openbox and Fluxbox come with a menu like that of lxpanel or xfce4-panel. Perhaps a package I can install other than obmenu (which is glorified text editor anyway).

[all variants] FakeRAID cache & recovery options topic

Hi,

I'm getting ready to build a new system based on Ubuntu 14.04, and I have a couple of questions regarding Intel's "fakeRAID". I'm planning to buy a motherboard with a Z97 chipset, and what I'd like to achieve is two RAID arrays: a RAID1 to store the operating system, and a RAID5 for data storage--photos, music, etc. I've already got a SSD that I'd like to use as part of the RAID1 mirror, and several 1TB HDDs for the RAID5. There are two questions that I'm trying to resolve: 1) If I use the SSD with a same-sized HDD in a RAID1 configuration, will the system be limited by the write performance of the HDD (or read performance, for that matter), and 2) what are the advantages/disadvantages to using software RAID for the data storage array? From the research I've done I understand that one of the major advantages is that the disks can be moved to another system if necessary and the data can be recovered without loss, but the same is not true for an array built with the fakeRAID solution. If anyone with experience in this area could comment on either question or offer pointers to any docs, I'd really appreciate the help!

Thanks!

[all variants] If You're Afraid to Lose remastersys due to repository being shut down, try this topic

Everyone knows that Fragadelic has ended the project Remastersys. He's kept the repository of his open for some time with donations. If you happen to be lucky enough to get his repository up for the LAST version of Remastersys, there is a way to keep those deb files in case Fragadelic is unable to keep his repository up and running. It can be done in any of the Debian/Ubuntu variants. Follow these steps if you don't clean your apt-cache. If you DID clean your apt-cache, you may be out of luck.

1. Open your favorite file manager (mine being Dolphin since I'm on Kubuntu).

2. Navigate to the folder /var/cache/apt/archives

3. Look for the deb files remastersys-gui_3.0.4-1_amd64.deb and remastersys_3.0.4-2_all.deb

4. Copy these files from /var/cache/apt/archives to a folder of your choice via copy/paste with your file manager or use cp.

These simple steps will allow you to continue to use Remastersys till it is either replaced by yet another project as in this case the other project designed to replace Remastersys has since folded as well, or till this application can no longer be used due to dependency issues.

[all variants] Ebay seller software? Anyone know of some good ones for Linux/Ubuntu? topic

Hello!
I've been a hard-core Linux convert for the last 5 or so years now, I only boot to Windows when I absolutely need to - and I try to avoid that whenever possible.
I have a question I hope someone has some advice on.

I'm trying to get deeper in to Ebay as a seller, I've done it for years but recently been going at it a lot harder - employment reasons.
Does anyone know of any good software that runs in Linux for Ebay sellers to manage listings, profit, spending, fees....just about everything like that. I've seen there is Six Bit but it's only for Windows and want to avoid that for obvious reasons.

I've been looking but haven't found much yet. I may have to spend some $$ and buy something and branch out from the free stuff though, but that would just be a business expense.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Tom
