[ubuntu] Installation to blank hdd not working topic

I am in the IT field (fairly newly) working for a group that helps people with general questions, problems, etc. I had an individual approach me regarding an installation of Ubuntu. My organisation views Ubuntu as "third party" and so I'm handling this freelance.
The client had already erased windows off his internal hard drive. He was using Trust Tahr off a USB drive and when we selected "install Ubuntu" it took us through the install process. Everything seemed to be running smoothly. When we got to the end we went through the restart of the computer and it had not installed to the hard drive. Upon powering on the computer gave the generic "insert boot media and press a key" message. We weren't given an option to choose an install location during the installation. Should we have seen such an option? Is this potentially an improperly burned ISO? Basically, does anyone have a thought on why this occurred? We could run Ubuntu from the USB without issue so I doubt that the ISO was corrupted.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 14.04LTS Icons and Theme not working topic

Recently i've installed Ubuntu 14.04, works perfectly, but i tried to change the icons(Numix Circle) and theme(Numix, gtk i guess) with Unity Tweak tool. None of the installed themes or icons are working/changing. When i run compiz --replace in terminal, it brings all the changes i've made with the unity tweak tool and everything works perfectly, but on reboot theme and icons resets to default.

After Rebooting

After Running compiz --replace

x11vnc virtual display not working topic

Hi,

Not sure if i selected the right forum or where this thread belongs.

I have x11vnc install and it works as intended when connecting to the real X-server. But when trying to create a virtual display it seems to be working until i try to connect with a vnc client. I enter the password, the client window seems to open up but instantly closes again.

I know many people recommend other vnc-server for virtual displays, but since i want to be able to use both real x and virtual it seems x11vnc would be the best alternative. (Often use Plex to watch movies, tv shows etc, don't want to have to close that down when connecting to pc from tablet, hence the virtual display).

I have xvfb installed and when i start it i get this:

Code:

$ x11vnc -create -rfbauth /home/adamantis/.vnc/passwd

So far it appears to be working, but when connecting this happens:

Have you tried the x11vnc '-ncache' VNC client-side pixel caching feature yet?

The scheme stores pixel data offscreen on the VNC viewer side for faster
retrieval.  It should work with any VNC viewer.  Try it by running:

    x11vnc -ncache 10 ...

One can also add -ncache_cr for smooth 'copyrect' window motion.

Snort even though working properly does not report majority of rules topic

I have installed Snort 2.9.7.0 and it does not detect majority of attacks, such as nmap port scans, downloading exe files, opening documents containing keyword "root".

I use Snort together with Pulled Pork and Barnyard2. Everything seems to function and I can see alerts on the website that is powered by BASE.

The problem is that I can only trigger 3 different alerts. Everything else is simply not detected. I want obviously to be able to get alerts when someone performs port scanning, trying to attempt to perform DDOS attack and so on. This I cannot trigger. Do I have to enable something somewhere?...

I have made my own local.rules file, which contains a single rule - monitoring of ICMP echo packets.

Pulled Pork does show that it has downloaded over 20000 rules and over 5000 rules are enabled. This can be seen in snort.rules file, which I included in snort.conf file.

The 3 alerts I am able to trigger are:

stream5: TCP Small Segment Threshold Exceeded (this is due to my old Win SCP client)
ssh: Protocol mismatch (this is due to my old Putty client)
ICMP test (my own rule from local.rules)
My snort.conf can be found on the following website (had to move it there, because i reached max chars list): https://paste.ee/p/RTUgY

My pulledpork.conf can be found on the following website: https://paste.ee/p/ixZqW

My local.rules looks like this (which does work):

Code:

alert icmp any any -> $HOME_NET any (msg:"ICMP test"; sid:10000001; rev:001;)

Getting Wireless working on new install while offline topic

I in a catch-22 situation. I'm away from home in a hotel room with only WiFi [no RJ45 to plug into]. I brought a LUbuntu [14.10] installation disk and figured I would use this opportunity to get my laptop setup. It never occurred to me that the hotel room with be void of a wired connection!

I'm here with my wife, and have occasional access to my wife's Win 8 laptop so I can use it's wireless connection to download files, so I acquired the following, and transferred then to my laptop using a USB Flash Drive:

  • dkms_2.2.0.3-1.1buntu_all.deb
  • gksu_2.0.2-6ubuntu2_amd64.deb
  • libgksu2-0_2.0.13~pre1-6ubuntu4_amd64.deb
  • ndisgtk_0.8.5-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  • ndiswrapper-common_1.59-2_all.deb
  • ndiswrapper-dkms_1.59-2_all.deb
  • ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.59-2_amf64.deb

When I attempted to install them, I soon discovered that I needed gcc to compile them, which is absent from my Linux installation. Then I discovered that without the ability to use apt-get to acquire all the files needed to build and install gcc ['cuz my laptop has no internet connection], the task is a veritable nightmare of dependency upon dependency!!!

Does anyone have an idea of how I can to this? I looked for a gcc binary, but found none. Is there, perhaps, a friendly [apt-get-ish] way to use Win8 to collect the required gcc source files so I can move them over to my Linux laptop? Or is there a place that I can acquire a tar of ALL the files needed to build gcc?

wpa_supplicant wifi suddenly not working topic

Everything was working before.
Then, I made the dumb error of editing the binary file /sbin/wpa_supplicant with pico text editor.
and now it doesn't load at all and consequently, I don't have wifi support.

I tried downloading and compiling a new wpa_supplicant from their official site, but it seems that my ubuntu doesn't want to care about the replaced wpa_supplicant anymore. Like some bird kill abandoning her eggs after they were touched by men.

Help!

Thanks.

'Always On Top' feature not working with Wine topic

Running WINE 1.7.18. and Ubuntu 12.04 .In the 'Wine configuration' application under the Graphics TAB I have the first 3 check boxes checked off, including "ALLOW WINDOW MANAGERS TO CONTROL THE WINDOWS"..
For some reason when I try to apply the ALWAYS ON TOP feature that Ubuntu has for windows, it often reverts to being UNCHECKED, which is annoying to always have to go digging for the Wine window.
Is there any reason for this? It was happening in previous versions of Wine as well.

[xubuntu] Alt-f2 to open "run application" not working anymore topic

Since a while the keyboard shortcut alt-f2 to open the "run application" doesn't work anymore. Nothing happens. When I look in the keyboard settings, under shortcuts, I see that alt-f2 is correctly mapped to xfrun4. However when I edit the keyboard shortcut I can't enter "alt-f2". I don't get an error but the key combi is just not accepted. My guess is there is a conflict and that key combi is already in use somewhere else. However I checked all shortcuts I could find (also in the window manager settings) and can't find any other alt-f2 occurrences. BTW, alt-f3 and other key shortcuts still work.

I already tried resetting all shortcuts to default, and also deleting all my user settings (all hidden . dirs like ~/.config/ etc) and logging out & in again but the problem persists. I'm at the point of doing a clean reinstall (I really use xfrun4 a lot) but I'm hoping there's a simpler solution... ok I could map it to another key combi but that seems not a fix but a workaround.

I'm running xubuntu 14.04.1 with all updates installed. Thanks for any help!

Internal serial ports not working with standard IRQ topic

Hi,

I have recently set up a unit with Ubuntu and i am trying to use the internal serial ports to interface with another piece of hardware in the system. The problem is that i am unable to read or write to the serial port when it's using its standard IRQ (by default it uses IRQ 7). If i use setserial to set the IRQ to 0 it works but is pretty inefficient and seems to be causing issues with the other piece of hardware.

The other piece of hardware is a board which, among other things, passes the signal from a GPS antenna to the motherboard. On an older motherboard this worked fine but when i'm using IRQ 0 on the ports to get them working i experience very high jitter when using NTP, between 5 and 10ms. I'm assuming this is because of the serial ports using the timer IRQ, feel free to correct me on that.

I have tried to read them using cat and i am unable to write to them with echo. Trying to write to any of the onboard serial ports results in the terminal hanging for 30 seconds. I have verified that it isn't the hardware at fault as i have 5 other identical motherboards which all do the same.

What would the reason be for the serial ports not working using their standard IRQ? The serial controller is a Fintek F81866 and has the IRQs set to Auto in the bios which flicks them onto 7.

I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on this as it's been annoying me for some time and i'm all out of ideas now.

Broadcom Wireless not working after upgrade from 12 LTS to 14 LTS topic

Thanks in advance for any help offered. I upgraded from 12 LTS to 14 LTS today and my wireless is not working. I do have access to internet through an ethernet connection. I have tried to follow all the suggestions in various threads to no avail. The output of

Code:

lspci -nn -d 14e4:

gives the following:

Code:

09:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5761e Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:1680] (rev 10)
0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)

I ran

Code:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source

and updated and then ran

Code:

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

After a reboot wireless was still not working.

Can anyone offer suggestions? Again, many thanks in advance.

Auto-update not working. Haven't seen any updates since 12/13/14. topic

Hi Friends in the Ubuntu community,

I haven't seen an auto-update message since the last update I made on 12/13/14 and can't seem to find an option anywhere to download any new updates. Since then though I see a ton of scripts everytime I select Ubuntu on my dual-boot system installed on my Sony VAIO laptop, and Windows start-up has been finicky as well; restarts the computer before even getting to the Windows log-in screen. However, once I get either Ubuntu or Windows up and running all else seems fine.

I'm not super familiar with how to make changes in Ubuntu so appreciate any help you can offer in laymen's terms.

Thanks so much,
Erica

[ubuntu] 14.04 wireless not working only on home network topic

Hi,

I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on an Asus u36s in dual boot with windows 7.
I have troubles connecting to my home wifi network. I can connect to the wifi at the office and at my parents house, but it seems not to be working at home. Also if I boot in windows the computer is able to connect to the home wifi network.

The weird thing is that the connection on linux worked the first time and then stopped working. I tryed turning the modem off and on but it doesn't make it work.

Can you please help me?

Thanks,
Simone

New user, wireless not working after Ubuntu install topic

I am very new to linux and very new to the CLI. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. When I was running from disk my wireless worked fine. Now that I have installed the wireless connection works intermittently, and when it does work the speeds are not good. I am currently tethered to my cellphone, and have a pretty good connection. I have run the following commands:

lspci > ~/hwinfo.txt lsusb >> ~/hwinfo.txt lshw -C network >>
~/hwinfo.txt

And here is the

new to Ubuntu - Inspiron 1501 BCM4311 wirless not working topic

Hello, I'm new to Ubuntu. Actually I'm setting up a Ubermix 2.0 on an old laptop for my 10 year-old son to learn and use Linux.

The wired network was damaged, so I only have wireless working, which is BCM4311, and was working fine under Fedora 17 that I decide to replace with the much smaller Ubermix that fits better for a kid.

Here're the few output I got about the system:
user@system-:~$ uname -a
Linux system- 3.13.0-45-generic #74-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 13 19:36:28 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

user@system-:~$ sudo lshw -C network
*-network
description: Network controller
product: BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:05:00.0
version: 01
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0
resources: irq:18 memory:c0200000-c0203fff

user@system-:~$ sudo iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
user@system-:~$ sudo modprobe b43
But the wireless doesn't lit up.

Also, there is an entry in the blacklist.conf file:
# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx

Since I have no wired network, I cannot run the apt-get update to get whatever. I wonder what package I should download and install.

Can anyone having encountered this before here share some insight?

ASUS Xonar DSX not working with Pulseaudio nor Alsa topic

I read a thread from 2013 on the Ubuntu forums and from later 2013 on the Mint forums covering this. From those, I was told to use this: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.lin...a.devel/100921
However, I'm not sure how to apply that patch. So far as I can tell, there is no alsa-devel in the repositories.
One of the threads concluded that on newer kernal versions, this sound card should work. I'm on 3.13 and it's not being detected.

Any help?

[ubuntu] CAD applications not working on Ubuntu 14.04 topic

Hello.

I've just moved from ubuntu 10 (32 bits) to ubuntu 14 (64 bits) because of Draftsight, which now is only 64b. Once I installed all the system and programs, I realize that Draftsight can barely open files and move the pointer.

I decided to install LibreCAD and TeighaFileConverter to read DWG files. The result was the same, too slow to do anything.

So, I tested SageCAD, but this time the application crashes when I open any file.

What is happening and what can I do? Thank you in advance
