LVM Setup on an already installed Ubuntu gnome server topic

Hello everyone, I'm trying to set up an LVM on my File sharing server. The server has ubuntu 14.04 lts 64 bit running on a pentium dual core E2140 @ 1.60Z GHz with 1gb of memory (will be getting upgraded to 2 gb). The server is also running the latest version of Gnome. For drives right now I have 7 drives in the server:

Model: ATA IC35L04AVVA07-0
Size: 31.50 GB
Path: /dev/sda
File System: NTFS

Model: ATA IC35L04AVVA07-0
Size: 31.50 GB
Path: /dev/sdb
File System: NTFS

Model: ATA WDC WD400BB-60DG
Size: 37.27 GB
Path: /dev/sdc (this is the OS hard drive)
File Systems: sdc1 - ext4 sdc2 - extended sdc5 - linux-swap

Model: ATA Quantum Fireball
Size: 19.01 GB
Path: /dev/sdd
File Systems: sdd1 - extended (unallocated)

Model: ATA ST3250310AS
Size: 232.83 GB
Path: /dev/sde
File System: NTFS

Model: ATA WDC WD3200AAJS-6
Size: 298.09 GB
Path: /dev/sdf
File System: NTFS

Model: WD I HDS72 External
Size: 465.76 GB
Path: /dev/sdg
File Systems: sdg1 - extended New Partition #1 - lvm2 pv

I have no cd roms in the tower and no usb flash drives to do a live cd boot. what I want to do is first setup the group with sdd and sdg and move the files from the other drives to it (except the os drive) then I want to add the other drives to the group making it act as a drive with a little over a TB is there any way to do this without having to do a clean install or boot from a live cd? (I really don't want to do a clean install it takes a long time to get everything running correctly) if any other info is needed please let me know and I will get it for you. Thank you for your time and help :-) Christopher J. Crandall

Install OpenGL on Ubuntu Server Edition (14.4) topic

Hello, I have installed Ubuntu Server Edition 14.4. When I run the command "glxinfo" I get the output "Error: unable to open display". So I was wondering how can I install OpenGL on my system?

What I am trying to do is run Kodi on Ubuntu Server Edition 14.4. I did install and configure Kodi but when I try to run Kodi I get the error message

Error: unable to open display
Kodi needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering.
Install an appropriate graphics driver.

[server] vsftpd Solution topic

I am pretty new to linux and could use some help. I'm using Ubuntu server 14.04 LTS. I work for an adult mental health facility and we need to find a way to allow clients to access their records (It has to do with Insurance and lawyers ). Anyway, One option I have looked at is vsftpd. From what I know it seems like the best option because of it's security. This has to available to the outside world, so the server will be in our DMZ. Currently I am testing from my test environment and am having challenges. From a management standpoint, the request for access will come to our medical records department, they will gather all the data and format it into pdf.

Here's what is required for clients...

  1. username/password authentication
  2. Confined to one directory
  3. Only download, no upload
  4. SSL

Here's what I would like for Medical Records Staff...
  1. Ability to Create accounts
  2. Ability to set client credentials
  3. Ability to upload files to the clients directory
  4. simple and easy to use Web based / client based administration would be best

Is this possible? Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!

Scott

[server] winbind: net command: Could not connect to server 127.0.0.1 topic

Hi, (Ubuntu server 14.04)

Does anybody know what winbind and/or the net command was even looking for at the localhost address? ldap, smbd, nmbd, and krb5-kdc are all up and running and responding to command line requests on localhost.

Code:

sudo net domain join -U root
Enter root's password:
Could not connect to server 127.0.0.1
Connection failed: NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS

Prompted by the following error in the logs for winbind, which was failing to start up:

Code:

winbindd version 4.1.6-Ubuntu started
../source3/winbindd/winbindd_util.c:634(init_domain_list) Could not fetch our SID - did we join?
../source3/winbindd/winbindd.c:1204(winbindd_register_handlers) unable to initialise domain list

I had provisioned the domain with samba-tool successfully, so I had assumed I had run the net command to join the domain. Guessing not, although getlocalsid does return the correct SID stored against the domain record in the LDAP database.

Any help would appreciated.

Regards,
Rob.

[server] Correct procedure for extending disk topic

Hello,
I have many server with Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS.
I have 2 Virtual Disk: one for S.O. Ubuntu, second for my data.
Many times I need to extend second disk.
I follow this guide (VMware KB: Extending a logical volume in a virtual machine running Red Hat or Cent OS ) but after 4 primary partitions can no longer extend the disk.

What is the procedure / method to extend a linux disk ?
create partitions of type extended rather than primary?
Or is there another way?

[server] Installed Ubuntu 1404.1 LTS Server and KDE, can't login to KDE topic

I just came back to Linux 4 days ago. I want to host my own private website and can't figure out what to do with a blank terminal screen. (Though I have found some info on how to host a site it is not ready yet.)

So I also installed KDE because I used it on Simply Mepis for two years and loved it, about seven years ago. I have plenty of room for both KDE and a server on my current installation. (I searched online for answers and found mostly "don't do it," as in don't install a GUI on a server. I want to play Linux games, I miss them. Now on to the actual problem.

When Ubuntu loads it goes straight to KDE with an option to login as me (with my first name) or guest. To login as me requires a password which I was not asked to make during the KDE install process so I tried my ubuntu password and my mysql password with no luck. The only other option is logging in as guest which isn't much fun as I cannot make any changes that stick.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[server] Unable to ping local vpn from server topic

Hi,

I'm using Open VPN to connect my server. I'm able to connect my Opn Vpn, through that I can connect my server but when i tried to access resources of that server i am unable to access them.

I have installed "ambari server" on server. And when I tried to access ambari server through VPN, I can not connect to it. Also, I found that i'm not able to ping even the VPN Ip from server.

Anyone there to help me in resolving this issue??

Thanks in advance.

[ubuntu] Unable to install Ubuntu server on a Fujitsu-Siemens Rx100 first gen topic

Hi folks,

I am pretty new to Linux in general, but still I hope you you will be able to help me solve an issue that is really frustrating.

I would like to install Ubuntu Server 14 on a Fujitsu-Siemens RX100 Gen1 server HW unit.

Specs:
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with up to
2.66 GHz and 533 MHz FSB, or Intel®
Celeron® with 2.0 GHz and 400 MHz FSB
ƒ Up to 3 Gbyte ECC protected DDR-SDRAM
memory
ƒ Onboard 2-channel IDE controller with
RAID-0/1 functionality for striping and
mirroring of the hard disks
ƒ Max. 240 Gbyte internal hard disk
capacity with up to 2 hard disks (IDE)
ƒ 2 free PCI slots, 64-bit / 33 MHz
ƒ Onboard 1 Gbit and 10/100 Mbit Ethernet
LAN controller
ƒ http://www.erkawe.be/hardware/datash...ergy-rx100.pdf

Every time i try to install this system it fails.
I believe the main problem is the Onboard 2-channel IDE controller. It is a Fasttrak controller based on a Promise 20270 chipset.
This SATA raid environment is not recognised and therefor there is nowhere for Linux to install.

Surely there must be a way to install this system with Ubuntu? Eventually I would like to use it as a webserver.

All help is much appreciated.

Regards

[lubuntu] x11vnc server is not quitting after use topic

I've installed x11vnc server on my Trusty machine. I connect through SSH with a command like this:

Code:

ssh -L  5900:localhost:5900 remotehost 'x11vnc -localhost -display :0'

But if I press Ctrl+C in the local terminal, x11vnc does not stop properly. Running ps aux on the remote system shows several instances still running. What is the correct way to stop it?

[server] Web Tools for vsftpd topic

Hello everyone!! I'm pretty new to Linux. I need to set up a secure ftp server for clients to download their medical records. It looks like vsftpd is a good option for what I need, but I need a little guidance. I'm using Ubuntu 14.0.4.1 LTS. I have installed vsftpd with no issues at all. I'm looking for web interface options... Once the client has made a request Medical records will compile all of the data into pdf, so I'm looking for a way that they can easily create the clients user account, password, create home directories, etc... from a web console if possible. Webmin seems to be pretty popular, but I want to dumb it down for the staff so they only access what they need in order to complete the task.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Server Forums Sticky, Documentation, duplicate topics suggestions topic

Greeting!

Ubuntu server 10.04 reaches end of life soon, yet the linked server documentation point to 10.04
in the Server Forum sticky.

Will this be updated to 12.04 or 14.04 any time soon?

Perhaps there aren't significant changes between the versions. I can think of two
related to Apache
  1. Required to have .conf appended to vhost filename
  2. moved default Document root to /var/www/html

These changes are not reflected in the documentation.

I also have a suggestion. There are many posts with the same or similar request or solution.
Perhaps when clicking on "create new post" button the user should be redirect to the top 10
queries and also pointed to the documentation. Many new users are not familiar with the sticky
function in a forum.

Ubuntu server 14.04lt - HP Gen8 topic

I am currently working with a HP microserver Gen8, 16gb RAM and 4 x 1tb HDD

I am new to ubuntu server, without GUI, and would like to know if anyone can help me.

I am trying to work with Plex server on ubuntu but i cant figure out how to enable my other 3 disks to be able to be read by plex

my plan is to have 3 1tb hard drives and use them for different media, i.e. 1tb music 1tb films and 1tb tv programs. the reason for having them on different HDD is because my c: drive 1tb drive filled in the space of 2 days with the films and music, and I am planning to set up sickbeard to download tv programs automatically and couchpotato to download films

i am not sure if to set them up in LVM setup or buy a raid card and use them in a RAID5 configuration

Wireless Used to Install Server 14.04 Now Wireless Connects but no Internet topic

I have an old laptop that I wanted to take with me to my Linux Classes to test some of the stuff on real equipment. I didn't have a patch cable so I used my wireless card to connect to my wireless network. I chose OpenSSH, LAMP, MAIL, SAMBA. As soon as I logged into the command line I downloaded the Ubuntu-desktop package. Once into the desktop the wireless would connect, but there was no internet, yet it was working fine before the extras were put in.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion G7-1328DX. Its about 3 1/2 years old.

I would like to update this post to mention that last night my Ethernet card was working. Now when I connect, it doesn't show up anymore. I have no idea what's going. I tested all of this in a virtual machine and it was fine until I tried installing it on an actual machine.

[ubuntu] Slow ethernet speeds on fresh install of ubuntu server 14.04 topic

Hi all,

I just set up a server on my apt, but I am finding that any transfers over the network are very slow, capping at 15 megabytes/s. For reference, I can download faster on my wireless network from steam, capping at just under 18 megabytes/s.

First thing I though was the problem was the ZFS volume, however, testing directly on the drives I get 500MB/s without compression. Then I tried transferring files to the SSD and the speed was the same, the download speed is also the same in either case.

SMB, FTP and SFTP all cap at the same speed around 15MB/s. It is driving me nuts, I am using GigE and Cat5e cable which should support speeds faster than what I am seeing, heck even my wireless is faster.

At first I thought it might be the driver for the NIC, so I downloaded the latest version from Intel (my network chip on my motherboard is Intel I210), got the tar file and used # make install, modprobe igb, then added the modprobe igb to rc.local and ethtool confirms it is using igb driver. So I saw no difference at all.

Here is some output I get:

oscar@HTPC:~$ uname -mr

Myth server drive runs out of space topic

I have set up the mythbuntu server 14.04 on a headless server 3 times. The hard drive is 240Gb. After about a week of viewing live TV and recording a few shows, the hard drive runs out of space and then freezes. I was under the impression that the recorded shows would auto-delete before this happens. I have re-installed each time. What am I doing wrong? Is the drive not large enough? Is there a way to export the files to a NAS with more drive space?
