[server] Installed Ubuntu 1404.1 LTS Server and KDE, can't login to KDE topic

I just came back to Linux 4 days ago. I want to host my own private website and can't figure out what to do with a blank terminal screen. (Though I have found some info on how to host a site it is not ready yet.)

So I also installed KDE because I used it on Simply Mepis for two years and loved it, about seven years ago. I have plenty of room for both KDE and a server on my current installation. (I searched online for answers and found mostly "don't do it," as in don't install a GUI on a server. I want to play Linux games, I miss them. Now on to the actual problem.

When Ubuntu loads it goes straight to KDE with an option to login as me (with my first name) or guest. To login as me requires a password which I was not asked to make during the KDE install process so I tried my ubuntu password and my mysql password with no luck. The only other option is logging in as guest which isn't much fun as I cannot make any changes that stick.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[ubuntu] /usr/sbin/nologin & GUI login topic

I've an account with /usr/bin/nologin as the login shell.
If I try to su to that account, I get the message
"This account is currently not available"
as expected...

However I can still login to that account from the GUI screen and the account even gets its own desktop.
Removing the account home folder prevents GUI login; but this creates another set of problems such as applications failing to launch.

How do I prevent GUI login for this account?

Thank you

[ubuntu] VSFTPD login problems topic

I have installed Ubuntu Server 12.04.5 LTS on a HP Gen 8 Proliant DL380 Server. I installed VSFTPD also. I have run through the configuration of VSFTPD several times and I have also purged and reinstalled vsftpd a couple times. No matter what I do, I cannot connect via FTP. I have created a user that has no terminal associated with it (/usr/sbin/nologin). I have added this to the /etc/shells file. I can scp to the server. I have another server configured just like it with version 12.10 of Ubuntu Server and it works fine. I have compared the vsftpd.conf files and the vsftpd PAM files and they are identical. This is what I see in the auth.log when I try to login:

Feb 10 12:47:16 om-ncdu-uplynk2 vsftpd: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_cap.so): /lib/security/pam_cap.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory
Feb 10 12:47:16 om-ncdu-uplynk2 vsftpd: PAM adding faulty module: pam_cap.so
Feb 10 12:47:16 om-ncdu-uplynk2 vsftpd: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_shells.so): /lib/security/pam_shells.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory

My vsftpd.conf file looks like this:

# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf

# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.
# Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults.

# Customization

#
# This option specifies the location of the RSA certificate to use for SSL
# encrypted connections.

# This option specifies the location of the RSA key to use for SSL
# encrypted connections.
rsa_private_key_file=/etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key

My PAM file looks like this:

# Standard behaviour for ftpd(8).
auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/ftpusers onerr=succeed

# Note: vsftpd handles anonymous logins on its own. Do not enable pam_ftp.so.

# Standard pam includes
@include common-account
@include common-session
@include common-auth
auth required pam_shells.so

I have also deleted the user and added them again. All to no avail. Can anyone help me here? I am at a loss.

Thanks,

Jim

[lubuntu] Lubuntu 14.04 Vino-server Remote Desktop not accessible from boot at login screen topic

Hi folks,

I already tried to search the web a lot to solve my problem but the closest solution was this one but unfortunatly it refers to a file that does not seems to exists in Lubuntu 14.04.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2073830

i also readed these but didn't help.
http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Autostart
http://seb.so/vnc-from-boot-without-...and-mint-lmde/
http://askubuntu.com/questions/15900...ons-in-lubuntu
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1868554

The thing is thhat i can check the box for "desktop sharing" in the LXsessionConfiguration utility, that refers to the .desktop files located into /etc/xdg/autostart but it only start vino server until logged-in. it does not make the machine accessible after boot, at the login screen.

i cannot belive that i'm the only one using Lubuntu that needs the machine to be accessible from start at the logon screen.

Please tell us where to put the "/usr/lib/vino/vino-server" command.

Ubuntu login screen topic

Hi,

Not entirely sure this is the right place for this so please move if needed. I'm running xbmcbuntu and have the issue of when I try to log into ubuntu I'm presented with the login screen which used to have my username already populated or I could click other and type another if needed. However it no longer shows my username automatically and I was wondering how I can change this back.

Not sure if it may have anything to do with the fact that the account did have a password but I removed it from the account. Or should that not make any difference?
