Pooed on my network settings when trying to set up a domain topic

Hey guys! I did poo! :P
At work, we have a large network where you don't really need to login to use the internet, but then you won't also have access to printers and file sharing. So, when I first installed Ubuntu, all worked fine without any extra setting!

But.. as I am transitioning to Ubuntu, I tried inserting my Ubuntu into the domain so I could use our shared printer, but I definitely did something wrong, and now not even the internet is working. I remember of changing the /etc/hosts file. Where it's normally "127.0.0.1 localhost", I stupidly tried changing it to "127.0.0.1 mydomainaddress.ac.uk" ), and obviously it didnt work. So I wrote back just "127.0.0.1 localhost". And my internet is still not working!

I tried googling a way of reset all network settings to default but none worked. I tried:

sudo iptables -F
sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
sudo service network-manager restart
dmesg | grep -e ath -e wlan

I know they're very random but I have been trying everything to have internet back on my Ubuntu and it's just impossible!

Anyway, thanks a lot and please let me know if you have any fix for my poo! =P

[lubuntu] Keyboard layout issues: no effect when changing settings in lxkeymap topic

One of the recent updates (~ 1.5 weeks) has totally screwed up my previous keyboard layout.
Still worse, I can't seem to REMOVE what's pre-set in there.

I've always loved the variant to have the ever-useless CAPS LOCK as "Compose" key.
However, by some magic the "shift_caps_toggle" option was added (it was not there before), and now is obviously blocking Caps Lock from working the way I want it!

I've tried everything imaginable to get the "grp:shift_caps_toggle" option removed from the layout, but it just does not work.

Plus, I've tried to grep for this option to be configured anywhere, to no avail.

Though not recommended, I even removed the "shift_caps_toggle" option from ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels/panel, but now look:

Code:

andy@andy-lubuntubox:~$ lxkeymap -a
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/lxkeymap/helpers.py:46: GtkWarning: Unknown property: GtkMenu.ubuntu-local
  builder.add_from_file(ui_filename)
Sections: ['Global']
Layouts: ['us']
Variants: ['', '']
Options: ['grp:shift_caps_toggle']
['Global']
['compose:caps']
Lxkeymap autostart running...

Ehh??
Where else does lxkeymap (which is a Python script, by the way) pull that Options line from?
For a moment, I've even thought of a random variable which was not cleared (like in C, when you don't initialize a string variable, it might display some random garbage)

Sometimes lxkeymap recently complains that it is unable to save current settings. Hmmm...

Wifi settings for different users topic

I wasn't sure where to put this as it's not strictly about wifi settings. Hope it's ok here.

After updating to 14.10 last autumn I had problems with wifi - it worked perfectly with known connections but could not view and connect to new ones and the tray icons had disappeared. I tried various fixes without success and eventually reverted to 14.04.

I've recently re-installed 14.10 and the same problem has reappeared. BUT I discovered that the guest user sees things perfectly and can connect with no problem. So, I decided to create a new user and this new user also sees things perfectly.

So, two questions. First for pure curioslity - why is this happening?

Second, can I migrate settings from one user to another? Either to copy the working config from new user or guest to my own user, or to copy cookies, favourites and files from the original user to the new one?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

troubles with speed limit settings on FatRat topic

I recently installed FatRat from the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS software center, and I am having problems with it ignoring my attempts to throttle the download speeds. Every time I start a new download, a small window appears for me to paste in a source URL, and to set speed limits, and the limits are ignored. I can create a queue, with a name, and set speed limits there, as part of the queue properties, but that still guarantees nothing. If I set a queue speed limit, then add a URL to download, and also set a speed limit in the same popup window the URL gets pasted into, then and only then do I see the download being throttled down. Is that the way it is supposed to work?
